"Petrobras’s huge offshore oil discoveries in recent years now enable its
leaders to contend that it could surpass Exxon Mobil * * * as the world’s
largest publicly-traded oil company.
"Argentina ranked third in the world, after China and the United States, in
shale gas reserves * * * according to a report released in April by the US
Energy Information Administration. Mexico * * * has huge shale gas reserves
ranked fourth in the world.
"Middle East oil remains cheaper to produce [than offshore drilling and
production]
Venezuela "surpassed Saudi Arabia this year as the nation with the largest
oil reserves, at 1.19 trillion barrels. * * * US Geological Survey [a
government agency] said that just one of its hydrocarbon assets, the heavy
oil found in an area called the Orinoco Belt, called the Faja in Venezuela,
is the largest oil accumulation it ever assessed.
My comment:
(a) In 1972 Exxon was the new name for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.
In 1999, Exxon and Mobil merged to form ExxonMobil.
Exxon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil_Company_of_New_Jersey
("The company initially planned to change its name to 'Exon,' in keeping
with the four-letter format of [Jersey Standard's brands] Enco and Esso.
However, during the planning process, it was noted that James Exon was the
governor of Nebraska. Renaming the company after a sitting governor seemed
ill-advised, and the second 'x' was added to the new name and logo.")
(b) The report says "it [Brazil's oil find] also offers a vivid example of
the reordering of Latin America’s energy hierarchy in which traditional
energy exporters like Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia are seeing their sway
eclipsed by nations with big discoveries."
Ecuador
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador
("foreign companies developed oil resources in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In
1972, construction of the Andean pipeline was completed. The pipeline
brought oil from the east side of the Andes to the coast, making Ecuador
South America's second largest oil exporter")
(c) Now a public company (listed inNew York Stock Exchange) based in Houston
, Apache Corporation was founded in 1954 in Minneapolis.
(d) Orinoco Belt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orinoco_Belt
he Spanish noun "faja" means "belt" in English.
(e) Tissot is a French surname meaning a weaver.
Toro is a Spanish or Italian surname ("toro" in both language means "bull").
(f) Regarding quotation 2, that China has world's largest shale gas reserve.

http://www.eia.gov/countries/cab.cfm?fips=CH
("Most of China's shale gas resources reside in the Sichuan and Tarim basins
in the southern and western regions and in the northeast basins")
(iii) 中國大發了. Still, without Western technology, Chia may well sit on
its own fortune wringing its hands.
