around 100K or under. Mixed schools (some teaching and some research) or
private teaching schools could pay up to 140k.

research schools, most people (like me) will prefer to be teachers, I think;
no need to worry about darn papers or publications.

important factors that determine whether you can get tenure at teaching
schools, while it is more about publications in research schools. Some
teaching schools have high publication requirements too.

person directly though everybody else was unhappy. He accepted school A but
then accepted school B a few weeks later. So, school A did not hire any
candidate that year because they had turned down others. Bad reputation for
himself and his school. The faculty from his school (where he got his PhD)
said no students from his school should waste time applying for school A
again in the next 10-15 years.
So, if you accepted an offer, you should honor your words for the goodness
of your reputation, your adviser/school's reputation.

这件事情被我们这边faculty后来知道了。系里好多人都不喜欢他，觉得他人品有问题。

1. ask friends (say students or faculty) in the school of your next campus
visit how other candidates are doing so far. This will give you a very good
idea of the likelihood of you getting an offer there compared with your
competition.
2. if you find that there are very strong candidates that the other school
likes very much and if you do not feel very confident about your chances
compared with others, then bargain with the current school that gave you an
offer and say that you are willing to give up your later opportunities to
accept their offer if they can give you $10k (or whatever amount you feel
reasonable) increase in the salary (or some other thing you can negotiate
for.
If you accept your current offer, when you visit your next school, just tell
them you appreciate the opportunity for the campus visit even though you
had accepted another offer.
One other thing you can do is to see whether you can change your visit date.
Normally, it is very hard to do that on short notice, but you never know
for sure unless you ask.
Most of us are risk averse in these matter. That is, you probably do not
want to turn down the current offer if you only have one other campus visit.
A few years ago, an Indian student from another school turned down U
Connecticut thinking he would get another offer from the remaining schools
he would visit. But unfortunately, he did not and had to wait for another
year and ended up in a worse place than that school even in the following
year.
