All i want to say is after you are invited for interview, (either phone or
on-site), the most important thing is no longer your research credentials.
it is almost entirely your ability to interacting with people. These things
are particularly important:
1. your inter-personal skills such as smiling, not complaining, being
enthusiastic, being patient. being considerate.
2. your ability to listen to others when they speak.
3. your knowledge about the department/university and their future direction
and other people's research.
4. your ability to speak about your future research direction.
It is really a subtle combination of confidence and humbleness, taking
initiative and being flexible, great conversationalist and yet a good
listener.
In a way, it is a lot like dating. Be an attractive person!
Be a pleasant person sometimes is the most important factor. You are on the
short list, so your CV is no longer a big issue. What sometimes make a
person fail an interview is entirely pending on his/her personality, the
ability to listen and ask questions. |

后还是看内部投票排名，而这个很大程度上取决于CV和committee的个人喜好。至于job
talk，只要正常表现，就没啥区别的。

烂，还是有很大影响的。
我今年找Faculty，我老板让我找以前我们系的人的Video.他特别提到几个人，他觉得
excellent，那些人都似乎呆在不错的学校。同时，我老板也提到几个差的talk，查了
一下其中两个都还在Postdoc。有一个人Publication非常strong， SIGGRAPH 4, 5 篇
的，cornell毕业Standford博后，现在还在Postdoc。 |

管多冷都得配合，给job talk时提问再刁难也要handle with grace, 如果问的问题恰
好你有所准备胸有成竹，就说"that's a great question", 如果被问的猝不及防就说
“thanks for the question; it is definitely an intriguing one”, 实在答不上
来了就说“that's a very thought-provoking question; honestly I haven't given
it much thought but I will definitely look into it and get back to you”
总之表现的就是一个巨nice巨积极乐观的年轻人 |

但是后来那些简历看起来非常牛的人在面试的时候表现得太糟糕了，糟糕得让本来想挺
他们的人都不好意思说话。结果就让小三上位了。

If you continue to do so, your job talk will be great when you are ready for
job searching. It is all about training.

的话，作为 committee member的会怎么想？能力不突出？还是应该向烙印那样夸夸其
谈？说什么都是专家的样子？
比如说这样一个问题“what lead to your success in career?" 是向牛顿老人家一样
站在巨人肩膀上？还是把自己有能力的方面突出一下表示小荷已露尖尖角了？

i think quality of talk reflects a person's training. A good place often
provide ample opportunity for giving practices of good talks over years of
conference/lab meeting/seminars.

重要的依然是研究实力。所谓进了interview的CV都差不多，有那样的情况，但是少数
。大多数情况1，2，3是有档次差别的。
SMILE之类是小节。我们这曾来过个老印，CV好看，能说会道，性格好，job talk本身
从组织结构到delivery都是无懈可击，楼主的1-4可以说样样满分。但talk完了，大家
一致认为，做的东西也太简单了，硕士生水平。于是完全没有机会。
1-4里我觉得2比较关键。这个也不用装，你来interview，面对的都是比你senior的，
别人讲话注意听没有任何坏处。而且一般来讲，除非你是诺奖菲尔兹的材料，否则系里
每个人，不管水平如何，说的话里总会有些值得你认真听，认真思考一下的东西的。三
人行都必有我师呢不是。 |

露，你也就完蛋了。
我觉得呢，自己那一亩三分地一定要信心百倍--不是说装，而是真的要做到比面试系里
每一个不专门做你这个问题的人懂的更深更透。
另一方面，跟你那点地相关的那十来亩，要做到能半瓶子水晃荡（当然一定要知道自己
是半瓶水，别真觉得懂的比真做那些领域的更多），能知道这些领域里人
问问题时心里想的是什么。这样跟这些人才能聊起来，也才能回答好这些人的问题。这
一点是有些中国学生的弱点。平时关心的东西太窄。别人问一点半相关不相关的东西，
完全就不知道人家在说什么，也就没办法做出有针对性地回答。

发帖数: 1485 | 43 要做一个好的报告，最重要的是了解听众的水平和思维方式，并针对之。比如我前面说
的烙印，报告一上来搞了些小演示引出问题，非常生动活泼，大家的兴趣都被调动起来
了，但是接下来理论深度没跟上，前面的小演示到最后反而起了反作用，让大家对这个
人的印象更加负面。他这个报告不应该是job talk，而应该是一节本科生或研究生课。
其实一个好的报告和一堂好的课道理是一样的。无非就是准备的时候针对听众的层次，
讲的时候随时注意听众的反应并随之调整讲什么不讲什么，讲快还是讲慢。当然了不磕
巴是基本要求。

comment 一下也不为过。
楼主讲的是高级技巧，是人的 fundamental character，通常学不来，如果 candidate
有这种 people skill，而且技术又强以后就是做leader的材料（比如系主任，Dean，
program manager） ，不只是一个普通的发考题。没有这种本领的也不要气馁，大多数
老中 candidate 都没这些本事，这需要从小做班长，学生会主席，团支书，但这种人
通常技术好的不多，所以你要不是八面玲珑的性格也不必装，一装就连自己的
technical strength也被掩盖了。 |

问问题的半桶水搞得很郁闷。我在SC力挺，说俺们数学家，就是要有这样严肃的态度。
热烈讨论之后发了offer人没来。
中国人一般都会笑。不过笑其实不重要，重要的是能时刻留足够的注意力给对方。像这
个毛子，他非常严肃，但其实全部精力都放在思考你的问题上。当然，这样会让很多随
口问问的人非常不舒服。
