Yuli Gurriel gave the Astros a 1-0 lead Friday night with a home run off Yu
Darvish in Game 3 of the World Series, then returned to the dugout and
appeared to mock the Dodgers pitcher.
Cameras captured Gurriel sitting on the bench and pulling at the sides of
his eyes before laughing with teammates, appearing to mimic Darvish, who is
Japanese.
Gurriel, a 33-year old from Cuba, hit the solo shot in the second inning at
Minute Maid Park in Houston. He previously played baseball in Japan in 2014. | s*****h

Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel has apologized for making a racist
gesture towards Yu Darvish after taking the Japanese expat deep in the
second inning of his team's 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3
of the World Series on Friday.
"I didn't want to offend him or nobody in Japan because I have a lot of
respect, I played in Japan," Gurriel told reporters through an interpreter.
"Japan opened my doors to the game of baseball and I didn't mean to offend
them.
"I didn't think anybody would think (bad) about what I meant with all those
kinds of things like that. I offer my apologies to baseball and anyone
offended."

Gurriel, who tugged at the sides of his eyes and appeared to say, "Chinito"
- which translates to "little Chinese boy" - in the dugout after stroking a
solo shot off Darvish, spent the second half of the 2014 campaign in Japan,
starring for the Yokohama BayStars of the Central League.
"I didn't try to offend nobody," Gurriel continued. "I was commenting to my
family that I hadn't had any good luck against Japanese pitchers here in the
United States. .... (And) In Cuba we call everyone who's from Asia 'chino.'"
Gurriel, now hitting .340 in the postseason, is expected to meet Saturday
with commissioner Rob Manfred, who will then decide if the 33-year-old Cuba
native will be disciplined.

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Yu Darvish said Houston Astros first baseman
Yuli Gurriel deserves to be punished for the "disrespectful" gesture he made
after taking him deep in Game 3 of the World Series on Friday night,
according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.
After returning to the dugout following his leadoff solo shot in the second
at Minute Maid Park, Gurriel appeared to mock Darvish, an Osaka, Japan
native, by pulling at the sides of his eyes.
“Nobody’s perfect, and everybody’s different,” Darvish said, per Jeff
Wilson of the Star-Telegram. “We all make mistakes. We’re all human beings
. That’s what I’m saying. We’ve just got to learn form it and we’ve got
to go forward.”
He added: “Houston has Asian fans and Japanese fans, and there are Asians
all over the place. Acting like that is disrespectful to people all over the
world. To the Houston organization, it’s just not a nice thing.”
Commissioner Rob Manfred is expected to meet with Gurriel ahead of Game 4 on
Saturday, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, and he will
then decide if Gurriel is to be disciplined.
Gurriel, who finished 2-for-5 with a homer and a double in his club's 5-3
victory in Game 3, is now 18-for-53 (.340) with eight extra-base hits and
five runs batted in this postseason. | m****o
