if you really like it, then it might be worth it to get a JD. but your PHD is

Then a JD is worth it. You will make at least $125k after JD, if not more.
So instead of spending 3 years doing a postdoc, using that time to get a JD
gives a much higher return.
For now, the best route is to get a technology specialisit position in an IP
firm, get an H1B and green card (if possible) while doing the LSAT and
application, take the patent bar, and then go to law school. It's much more
rewarding than staying in the bio research path.
And you won't give up all the scientific crede

What? what? why when someone mentions JD,suggestions always refer to IP,
patent? I totally agree that IP rewards you more money, but dealing with
papers every day and sitting in the bottorm of a strictly-structured big firm
is meanless. why not try other fields, something like insurance, taxation,
family law, personal injury, health malpractice......

If I were you, I would shoot for the June LSAT test. Right now, I would focus
on finding an IP-related job first. Once you land the job, have a feel of
what's going on, that will give you a lot of security.
Then by next march or april, you can worry about LSAT. The application
process is not very controllable by you, but the job search is. Once you have
a job, everything else can be negotiated. But if you just jump ahead and
start preparing for the LSAT right now, it will put you in a disa

we need to understand the mentality of recruiters. a bio PhD on your resume,
if you are looking for family law, etc., will ~work against~ you, not for you.
it means "i didn't know what i want for my life, and i had to switch to law
because i can't find a job." this is a big red light, a sign that you can't

maybe it has to do with the school. If one's law school is ranked not too
high, and this person has a tech/science backgroud, then maybe IP is the only
good option. But if the school is top 14, then maybe there are other options,
say corporate, or tax law, like the lady upstairs.

school ranking is the number one guarantee for high income for JDs, this is
undisputed fact.
for LLMs, I don't know. but from what icejelly said, she was the only one to
land a job among all harvard LLMs -- does that say something about Harvard
LLMs? -- if you are an LLM, even being in Harvard doesn't help much, it's your
past work experience that makes the call.
the controlling factor in icejelly's success, is not her grades, or school

I don't think it will be that big of a minus, if it's any. If everything
being equal, it might even means you are more disciplined than the next guy.
I read about a guy, who has a PhD in Literature, went to a not very good
school, and then gotten a Yale LLM, now is a law school professor. So in my
opinion, having a PhD won't hurt/help you very much. There are other stuff
which are way more important than this.

your bio phd is a ticket to $$$ if you are in for IP, it's not useful for
other non-technical, non-business related law such as family law, personal

You will be hot commodity here in the US, not China. IP in China is virtually

regarding the salaries of top ranking schools, there are plenty of folks here
who are qualified to tell about this. my point is that law school ranking is
very important, but it's not the only way. Which way will work for you depends
on individual cases.
regarding PhD+IP, my short answer to your question is "yes".

That's true. Market timing is very hard to predict, it's usually better to
secure a job first, then consider further investment in law school.
all the jobs are in four states does not mean there aren't enough jobs. as of
today there are still plenty of IP jobs for PhD+JDs. the question is how many

Actually, 3 years ago, JD is not considered a typical career path for Bio
Majors; but now, I would say between 10-20% of bio majors I know are
considering it, due to an over-abundance of Bio major, bad job market in
bio-tech companies, etc.
Last year, 5 people from my department (very small department with 30
labs, 20 new GS and 5-6 new postdoc a year) already went to law school.
Also, I noticed an interesting trend in more Chinese students going to law
school too.
