so many who want to make it that we can’t look at them all, so we only
look at the fastest and the strongest. Also like talent agents, we don’t
have time to give each one a thorough examination the first time through and
will probably only spend eight seconds looking at the top half of your
resume before we decide if you’ll make the team. So how do you get your
resume to be big, strong, and easily visible to us hiring managers? Keywords

Pump up Your Resume and Get Past the Gatekeepers
1.Take out the Fluff: One of the most common ways recruiters find qualified
candidates is by putting a keyword search in their database and relying on
the best matches. This means that all the boilerplate you have on your
resume like, “dynamic leader,” “great team member,” and “visionary,”
are just taking away space on your resume from things we DO care about.
Think about it. When we search for a product manager, we don’t put “
dynamic leader” in the search box. We look for product names,
certifications, areas of expertise, and programming languages. If you’re an
expert using flexible endoscopes for a transsphenoidal procedure or a PEEK
composite for a spinal implant, put it on your resume. Have you worked
through a Class 3 IDE? Are you Six Sigma certified? Do you have an extensive
SQL background? Acquired IP? Raised VC funding? Taken a company through
bankruptcy? Let us know so our computers can find you!
2.List skills that you’ve used in past. We’re interested in your
progression as a professional. If you can, list vendors, competition,
distributors, or software you used. In addition to your past, you can also
use keywords to manage your future. Try to include the title you want in
your keywords. For example, if you’re a marketing manager now, include “
Director of Marketing” in your keywords. If there is something unique or
extremely valuable about you, list it twice. You’ll show up higher in our
search results.
3.Make your resume searchable by not including quotations, slashes,
conjunctions, or only listing one of a variation of possible listings. This
makes your resume easier to find with a Boolean search. Remember, some
search programs only look at the first 100 words of a document, so make your
first 100 words keyword rich and specific.
4.A controversial secret to getting to the top: This is somewhat
controversial in the recruiting community, but we personally find it
extremely helpful. Add another section to your resume titled: keywords. Use
that space to include all of the phrases and words it would look strange to
put elsewhere on your resume. This is the place to put phrases without
conjunctions, multiple variations of a title (i.e. Pro-Engineer, Pro-E, Pro/
e), and list off all software you’re familiar with as well as your level of
proficiency.
Following these keyword guidelines will help your superstar resume find its
way into the inbox of the talent agents who can take your career to the next
level. For more tips on resume building, see our website at www.
