好得几个呢。上K之前，就会1+1=2，就能数到30。上了K, 经过中文学校的填鸭教育，
已经能做进位加
法，借位减法了。小孩子，学东西，快得很。

would correctly tell me how many girls or boys in his class, and likewise.

understand the logic and operations behind the abstract meanings. What he
needs is how to link the real, meaningful counting with the abstract and
boring math.
I hope the above comment could further relieve you from your worries. Every
kid is special. As parents, we simply need to provide the occational help
when needed.
