Occupy Palo Alto will meet at Palo Alto City Hall today at 11 a.m. as part
of a coordinated effort among local Occupy groups, labor organizations and
immigrant-rights groups, Occupy Redwood City has announced.
Meetings are taking place throughout the Bay Area as part of May Day, the
internationally observed labor holiday.
Dubbed "May Day on the Peninsula," the collection of events will focus on
important issues in the labor and immigrants-rights movements.
The actions are being staged "to remind corporate interests that headquarter
themselves on the Peninsula that they are not safe from the people's anger
just because they are not located in Oakland or San Francisco, and show
those in power that without the 99 percent their engines of profit can and
will cease to function," Occupy Redwood City stated in a press release.
Occupy Palo Alto will put together improvisational, collaborative non-
violent direct actions directed toward sites catering to or run by the 1
percent in downtown Palo Alto. Actions will happen between noon and 2 p.m.,
and could vary in length depending on the situation, according to the
statement.
Other Occupy gatherings are planned for San Jose, Los Altos, Redwood City
and Mountain View. Redwood City students from Sequoia and Woodside high
schools are planning a half-day student strike. A rally and march for
immigrant's rights will take place at 4 p.m., from Mountain View's
Rengstorff Park to City Hall.
