系里phd学生多，有几个学生不是我自己愿意收的，都是系领导分配的。有两个印度学
生不好好干活，但总是随时来找,有什么问题就直接敲我门，我比较愿意如果有事可以
约时间meet或者email我，不喜欢那种随时随地想来就来，除非真的很急。不知道我能
直接跟他们说我的工作方式吗？还是大家都有open door policy |

有一个竟然4个F一个D－还有2个期中考后退课，学期GPA 0.11，总GPA 0.25，大概是记
录了。这位兄台说是我的学生，我从来没有见过他，每学期我都发3封邮件给所有
advisees让他们来和我聊天，他从不回。注册课他也找学校辅导中心弄，仅有一次来往
是这学期要退掉某门课email给我。这老兄还真的早退学早好。
但其他人我还是想帮他们的，也给了部分人建议，太触目惊心了，所以吐槽一下。 |

发帖数: 915 | 3 我是这样做的。如果我不希望被打扰，我会关上门（虽然系主任就在隔壁）。如果开着
门，那么我并不discriminate是lab学生还是课堂学生，喜欢的或者不喜欢的学生。他
们都可以进来。但是，有个前提，就是问题都要很quick，因为如果只是一两句话就可
以打发的，或者签个字什么的，email另约时间更麻烦是不是？但如果一两句话发现不
是容易解决的，我就说okay we need to find a time to talk about this。你先回去
，跟我再约。
至于这种advisee，我认为一种有效的方法就是每周固定约个时间，比如周五饭后半小
时。send them an calendar invitation with all meetings marked for a whole
semester。他们如果知道有固定时间来，通常会攒多了一起问，除非是急事。即使没有
问题，他来了你问个hi how are you之类的，他就走了，也就是一分钟的时间，也可以
保证有人不会玩消失。 |

collaborator, advisee/advisor这三类才算：

欧盟-FP8总经费投入上线比FP7已执行经费每年减少10亿欧元，占FP8总经费投入的十分
之一。
中国-Science上NSFC新头目直接说经费增长幅度将在他的任期内放缓。年增长率收窄到
10%以下
日本-刚刚执行一次性科技刺激计划，但其经费增长将无法保证与通胀同步。（日本的预
算变化越来越接近随机函数了，我屮艸芔茻我看不懂了）
老兄，全球性的科研投入长期下行已经不可避免，睁开眼看看现实吧。
三体人来地球要几百年，但英国要再砍10%科研经费的新CSR就在明年！我也想慢慢搞基
础研究，但MRC明年就可能被合并了，不做点啥可能就要喝西北风啦！上次CSR，隔壁一
个刚刚过了5年评审的MRC CENTRE就被干脆利落的停掉资助啦！一层楼的人都失业啦！还
有一个老板受不了跳楼啦！我现在看CSR的新闻，就跟三体里人物突然发现视网膜上有字

It seems that you opnly applied to one university. Do you know the rank of
that university? The faculty are very busy. Some of them even don't answer
emails from their advisees.
If you are applying the same university as your hubby or wife, you should have
some network at that univ bah. Use the network, ask for the help from the
advisees of those professors. It may be better than you simply keep sending
emails.

never get his assignment ahead of time, which prevents you from getting
things on time. That is your colleague's business to tell his student what
to do. I typically just told my colleague about what I felt uncomfortable
about her/his advisees. They typically deal with it pretty quickly. |

偶读研究生系的一个老师是个巨牛，圈里有名的刺头，系里很多junior faculty
都怕他，他在偶的委员会里，曾经也恨过他，因为他让偶comprehensive exam
过了一年才过(说偶方法方面的背景不够强，让再选两门课才能重新写他出的题，
但是他那部分的题在答辩之前都做了决定不让过，连给个答辩的机会都没有）
但是偶后来还是从心底里感激他，因为他教课教的太好了，是一个特别敬业的老师，
也和他一起做过研究，受他很大的影响。他去世的时候，我还专门飞回学校参加
他的memorial service, 他很多自己的advisees都没去，系里很多老师也没去...
很巧的是在那里碰到一个专业top journal 的主编，本来就很熟，不知是否因为那个
特殊的场合，在之后的一两篇文章接受的特别顺利...这就是所谓的 karma吧，
what goes around, comes around.
现在系的一个老师也是个在很多人眼里nasty的人，偏巧和我一个方向，和我
关系很好，我知道他是我 tenure case强有力的支持者，... 阅读全帖 |

发帖数: 981 | 19 老实说这种情况其实很正常，比较较真的美国老师的确会这么做，算不上出格
或者变态。我们系恐怕至少有20%的老师会这么做，我自己的美国TAs 也做过这种事。
你只是不幸运碰到这样的老师而已。
的确老师不应该直接通知你，而是通知学校的 student honor council 之类的机构，
但如果是报上去，就一定会是个 XF, 不只是 F, 跟驾照吊销要重新上课一样，要
上课才能把 X注销掉。结果都会是 F.
我自己就碰到过两次这种事情，都发生在我的中国 advisees身上。所幸老师是和我
非常要好的一个同事，没有直接处理或上报，而是先跟我谈的；我苦口婆心地求情
才没有挂科，一个学生拿了个C, 另一个学生是考 qualify, 让专门写一篇研究
plagerism的论文作为处罚。她们做的相对于你轻的多的多。因为我那个同事的要求
很高，超过三个字如果没有加quotation marks, 即使引用了，也选抄袭。可怜的是
我拿 C 的那个学生当时刚从国内本科毕业，第一个学期就碰到了我同事，写作习惯
不规范，上来就吃了一嵌；倒好，这两个学生后来都养成了很好的习惯。所以有时候

你们系教授，让他们鼓励自己的advisees选修你的课，尤其是你的合作者。还有一个方
法是重写一下你的课程介绍，有可能加些有意思的东西，让学生觉得学了有用，再让小
秘书帮忙把介绍发给你们系所有本科生，你甚至可以考虑让别的相关系的小秘书把介绍
发给那些系的学生。 |

我会让他们晚些时候再来，或我去找他们。不过每个人风格都不一样，你愿让学生提前

advice after explaining your situations and concerns. He/she may let your
advisor know your situation in a nice way and help find a good solution.
The worst case is to change advisor, which happens often in many CS depts.
Finding a good match btw advisors and advisees is not an easy thing.

relationships are as bad or contractual. There are sincere ones. Also depend
on how you develop it yourself. The relationship is foremost an
interpersonal human relationship. You also can not use those unsatisfactory

employee; (3) Supervisor-
subordinate; (4) Trainer-trainee; and (5) professional friendship.
Guanxi- connections: an advisor may be the most important referee for one's
future at least for the first job.
If you do a good job, above and beyond, I think your advisor will help you
whenever/wherever he/she can. In
the end, graduate students are our products and a big part of our life. At

，自然就很占便宜了。
我们许多时候是输在这方面了。我认识好几个人，都是成绩很好，其余credential也不
错，但最后match失利，实
在很遗憾。走到match这一步，对于我们是真不容易，每个面试都是珍贵的，不容浪费
啊。
那如何解决这个问题，尽量了解这个match的过程呢？我看大家都在找身边朋友打听，
有些时候也在板上询问，
