Playboy Interview: Vladimir Nabokov
By ALVIN TOFFLER • PLAYBOY • JANUARY 1964
Playboy: With the American publication of Lolita in 1958, your fame and
fortune mushroomed almost overnight from high repute among the literary
cognoscenti—which you had enjoyed for more than 30 years—to both acclaim
and abuse as the world-renowned author of a sensational best seller. In the

I kneel and knock at a door.
A door has no keyhole but a seal.
Answers a song by the soul I adore.
Your arms lifted my soul, sings her heavenly appeal,
Now, I summon them to lift yourself even more.
I kneel and knock at a window.
A window has no glass but stainless steel.
In the steel mirror I see us cuddle on a rainbow.
Tender and sweet are your fingers, I feel.
Yet the sun chills me in your shadow.

If a boy is aloof, stand-offish, ignores you or is just plain rude, it is
because he is secretly in love with you — and you are the point of his

Secrets are good — especially life-threatening ones.
It’s OK for a potential romantic interest to be dimwitted, violent and

If a boy tells you to stay away from him because he is dangerous and may
