这个grant很小，Sigma Xi的，一次性的$500-1000，所以本帖不是BSO。补充一下，我
PhD第三年。
申请这个grant主要是由于在选系主任的一门有关学术写作，尤其是如何写grant的课。
课的要求要必须实打实的申请grant，因为国际学生可以申请Sigma Xi这个，而且一年
有两次机会，课上的几个学生几乎都申请了这个；当然那些美国公民还申请了其它的。
系主任所提倡的写作方法有点像八股文，每段第一句一定要是中心句，而且要是一个
argument。后边几句要支持中心句。每段都是而且只能是一个argument，第一段最好能
涵盖整个proposal的中心。通过argument，要具体地突出你的研究的重要性。
对于这样的写作方式，我谈不上很喜欢。我更注重逻辑上的流畅和idea的可行性和创造
性。所以难免和系主任以及班上的同学有点不同的观点。一起上课的十个人，除了我和
LP，其他的八个都是native speaker。每周的课堂上，我们都要一起讨论其他人的

cantor diagonal argument 里面的无限序列上的 permutation 本身，马工还是有对付
的办法的。。。比如如果拿 0 和 1 的序列做例子，从第一位上有两个 choice，选好
第一位以后，第二位再有两个 choice，这样马工可以画出一个无限深度的 binary (
decision) tree。。。在这个无限深度的 binary tree 上面，虽然马工不可能做
depth first traversal，但是做 breadth first traversal 还是可以的，所以该无限
深度的 binary tree 本身（只要不去 collect leaf node 先），还是可以 linear
ordered 毫无压力的。
但 cantor 的问题，是要把所有的 leaf node 给收集到一个集合里，再做个 diagonal
argument。。。对于这天顶星的一小步，地球马工蹦蹦机彻底没辙了。。。于是香浓
也只能骂娘。。。

为啥不反对legacy呢？
这才是不公平的大头。他们才占据最多的名额。
难道是不敢反对有钱有势的白人，但是欺负黑墨更容易？
MIT和UC系列不legacy，得到的校友捐款也不少。所以说捐款并非legacy的主要因素。
如果认真看过有关legacy的研究和wiki就会知道，legacy中白人多，是因为他们祖先时
代在美国的人数多。那时候排华法案和歧视黑人，亚裔和黑人能入读哈耶普的人数不多
，所以靠legacy的亚裔和黑人不多。
这实际是白人上层为了维持在美国把持议员和法院这些立法机构（美国法律体系中法官
判决也是法律的一部分），世代相传的政策。
所以华裔如果要想扩大影响力，在目前的AA制度下。华裔女生申哈佛（优势比白人女生
大），男生申哈佛艺术史专业，哲学专业（这是虎妈两个女儿读的专业。读哲学能做出
好的argument，美国的法庭是adversarial system就是双方deliver their best
