Fermilab club again in Batavia, IL. If anyone is interested, the club is
meeting on Wednesdays in Fermilab's User Center at 7pm. We have a couple of
beginners and players with ranks from 9k-17k. If anyone would like to join
us, enter Fermilab from the West entrance on Kirk road and let security know

briefly of the history of Baduk (Korean equivalent of weiqi), quoted here:
"Baduk was invented several thousand years ago. It was one of four great
accomplishments a gentleman was expected to learn: Geomungo (traditional
Korean zitherlike instrument), Baduk, Calligraphy and Painting....."

权教授组以17名拥有十年以上围棋经历的人（9名职业棋手和8名围棋研究生）和19
名不下围棋的普通人为对象，利用MRI（磁共振设备）对脑部进行了拍照比较。调查从
2007年开始共进行了一年的时间。在接受调查的对象中，围棋专家的平均年龄为17岁，
普通人的平均年龄为18岁。
研究结果显示，如果长时间坚持下围棋，脑部各领域间的连接环密度将会增加至平
常人的近两倍，脑神经也会得到更高效率的运转。权教授说：“据我们推测，这是因为

围棋 (在西方被称为”GO”, 在日本被称为”IGO”,在韩国被称为”BADUK”), 是一项在亚洲地区广为流传的棋类游戏，距今已有3000多年的历史。随着互联网在全球的普及及发展，围棋也随之在世界各国流传开来。围棋本身的规则相对比较简单，然而它却可以说是所有的传统棋类游戏中最为复杂和深奥的一种。由于围棋的变化多端，自古就有“千古无同局”之说。
本次围棋活动主要包括三部分：
1．免费围棋普及讲座 – 上午和下午均有。志愿者将以中/英文对围棋有兴趣的初学者提供围棋入门的讲座，以及展示有关围棋的很多信息及资料。详情请联系John Goon (s*******[email protected]).
2．网络混双比赛– Rockville 和中国嘉兴市棋院通过网络进行友谊比赛。 上午9点--12点。
