Qingdao University professor Zhang Beichuan, who is an expert on gay and
lesbian issues in China, told The Guardian he believes about 80% of gay men
and lesbians in China marry — people of the opposite sex. Often they have
unsuspecting straight spouses or they "partner" with another gay person for
a marriage of arrangement to please their parents. Xing Fei, an expert from
the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences, goes so far as to estimate that
approximately 12 million gay men in the country are ... 阅读全帖

Just who needs a cure?

By Xuyang Jingjing
The therapist seemed to sincerely believe that homosexuality is not only
something that needed curing but that his treatment could do it.
His over-the-phone pitch to this reporter, who was responding to a website
testimonial, centered on the difficult life gays and lesbians face in China.

His choice of words seemed designed to emphasize that homosexuality was some
sort of condition. "Think about it, gays are dif... 阅读全帖

In the eight years since Tianlei told his parents he was gay, they've put
relentless pressure on him to act straight and marry.
"My parents push me to deceive a girl into marrying me," said Tianlei, a 28-
year-old company manager in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan, using a
nickname.
"They just want a grandson to save face in front of others and don't care
how she would suffer... I would rather die than do it."
But in China, a great many men give in to the pressure.
An estimate... 阅读全帖

Dear colleagues,
The above picture was taken from a rescue scene at a collapsed elementary
school in Beichuan county in China's SiChuan province. China's worst earthquake
in three decades took place at 2:00pm on Monday 5/12/2008. As of 5/14/2008,
the official death toll has reached 15000. This number will rise far higher as
rescue and recovery efforts move forward. Thousands upon thousands of people
are still missing. Up to 3.5 million people had to leave their home and
stayed on the street.

Study Warned of China Quake Risk Nearly a Year Ago
Kevin Holden Platt in Beijing
for National Geographic News
May 16, 2008
A map included in a July 2007 study shows active fault lines in the region
where a devastating earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province on May 12,
2008. In the study, researchers warned—with what now seems like eerie
foresight—that the Beichuan region was ripe for a major quake.

6. Conclusions
We have documented Quaternary activity on a set of
large northeast-striking faults that parallel the eastern margin
of the Tibetan Plateau, using a combination of field
observations, photo and image interpretation, and 10Be
exposure dating of offset depositional landforms. The
northeast-trending Beichuan, Pengguan, and Dayi faults,
which parallel the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau,
have been active in the latest Quaternary with a dominantly
