中華民族是箇含蓄、害羞、善於聯想的民族，因此自古以來就有“避諱”之俗。避諱有
兩大原因，一是因爲道德、倫理而不願提起某箇字眼，一是攝於帝王將相的權威而改用
他字。因爲後者而避諱的字，往往只在某一個歷史時期，當時過境遷之後，人們自會復
用正字。而因爲前者產生的避諱，則可能會持續很久，甚至讓人遺忘掉正字和正音。“
鳥”和“操”就是兩個非常經典的例子。
“鳥”，本係端母字，注音都了切，讀若“扚”（diao3）。然而恰恰“屌”（男性生
殖器）字讀音與“鳥”相同。可以想像，整天說花鳥蟲魚，飛鳥走獸的文人墨客會覺得
多麼不雅。中古時期的士大夫就因因此把“鳥”改讀爲“裊”（niao3）。
有意思的是，在宋元時期的話本中，幾乎都還用“屌”字表示粗口，例如： “傻屌放
手，我趕相公去！”——元 馬致遠 《薦福碑》 第二折 “一點儿唾津兒曣下去，這屌
