到关岛了，这的确是美国，但是离其本土还差十万八千里呢，好比《大宪章》刚刚
颁布，离真正的法治和民主的路还任重道远；等飞到夏威夷了，这也的确是美国，
可是上面除了毛利土著、日裔华裔、海军大兵和旅游者之外，要想看看典型的美国
人恐怕还是找错了地方，这好比Simon De Montfort和Edward I时期议会刚刚试运
转，机制开始建立，模子已经越来越成型了，但还不能算货真价实；只有飞过了落
山鸡，才是真正地到了美国，好比经过了光荣革命，英国以至近代的法治和民主才
真正地落到了实处；不过实际上加州到处西裔亚裔印度裔犹太裔人士成群，其美国

Francis Parker的附近是平/贫民区， Bishop在La Jolla Cove. 学生比staff的ratio
Bishop也好很多。我家哥哥学校的校长和老师的小孩小学毕业后都去了Francis Parker
，估计是各有所长，正打算有机会问一问。我的牙医的三个小孩有去Bishop也有去
Francis Parker， 聊起为什么，说是针对小孩的特性，不过那是许多年前了，也就没
细问。和两个朋友讨论过，好像中国家庭选Bishop偏多，在猜测Francis Parker是否体

发帖数: 7173 | 18 终于把雨果的悲惨世界读完了。碰巧赶在橄榄球赛季的时候读这书，所以经常被打断，
有一搭没一搭的，中途差点都快放弃了，原因当然是因为雨果先生太卖弄历史，政治，
建筑，和污水管道的方面的知识了。写这些东西跟编百科全书似的，和本书的故事情节
发展几乎没有任何关系。一开始不知道这书的风格，还以为这些知识是小说的背景，就
硬着头皮了下来，如滑铁卢战役。我能理解这书刚出版的时候为什么也饱受批评了，实
在不能怪读者挑剔，而是真的是在挑战读者的耐心啊。但是，谁让他是雨果，大家就只
好忍了。
当然，除去这些百科知识，小说本身无疑是最精彩的故事之一。在那个年代估计是法国
历史上社会最动荡，思想最颠覆的年代了吧。共和，自由，平等当然听上去很崇高，只
是那些必须经过那个历史年代的人们，他们的生活恐怕就是悲惨世界了。雨果当然不是
在批判法国革命，相反的是他那种对革命的赞成，和对法兰西的骄傲处处可见啊。
归根到底，他是在探索人性，在探索饥饿，困苦，弃绝，鄙视的人的人性。只要这些东
西存在，悲惨世界就会存在。无论是哪个国家，哪个年代，无论是谁。感恩节感恩什么

其实很多年以前读了mengxu的那篇here i am, half dome的帖子，我就一直对yosemite
向往不已。而这次出去玩，yosemite和sf也是唯一2个我留出了2天时间的地方。这次本
来也想去hike half dome, 但后来做了一些research, 发现还要抽签，而且我也不知道
到了yosemite我的身体状况怎么样，所以最后还是决定算了吧。总的来说，我还是蛮喜
欢yosemite的，不过瀑布这东西，看多了也就这么回事，无非是有些大些，有些高些，
有些矮些...看多了多少有些审美疲劳，而且有之前去过niagara falls的经历，并不觉
得yosemite的那些瀑布真的太让我惊叹不已。同学们，listen to me, 要想在北美看瀑

讲的是Machine Learning的一类方法, 覆盖面很全, 篇幅分配也比较均衡. Bishop的书
其实应该叫"Bayesian Methods for PRML", 把所有的方法都纳入了贝叶斯统计的体系.
虽然很有系统性, 各种方法也都能覆盖到, 但是对于一些实用性较强的方法如SVM,
Bishop用了大量的篇幅论述这些方法的实用性不那么强的贝叶斯版本, 而忽略了这些方
法非贝叶斯的一些扩展, 感觉比较有失偏颇.
另外, Hastie和Bishop两本书貌似都没有涉及VC Theory和Generalization Error的内
容, 作为教材的话感觉缺了一大块, 得补一些Vapnik和Schapire的书中的章节. |

发帖数: 86 | 31 人口不到四千人的BISHOP小镇，坐落在EAST SIERRA山脉东部，西望Mount Humphreys（4258米），东北有White Mountain Peak（4342米），西北有Mount Tom (4264米) 。虽说绝对海拔远远比不上祖国的西部，但由于BISHOP自身海拔1264米，落差3000米左右的山峰还是很壮观。
BISHOP有2000多条技术性攀岩途径，难怪吸引了著名登山家及摄影大师GALEN ROWELL在此居住。
GALEN ROWELL可谓出身草莽，没有受过专业摄影教育的他，却成为一代摄影大师和登山家。在他62年的生命中攀登了包括七大洲最高峰在内的上百座高山，足迹遍布地球最边远的角落，留下了几十万张的摄影作品和17本各类图书。他的作品曾是国家地理杂志的常客，同时也在数不清的杂志上刊登过他的照片。他是中灰渐变镜的发明人，也是Singh-Ray中灰渐变镜的设计者和品牌持有人。

毕晓普可算是加国军事史上最声名显赫的英雄了，他生长在安省小镇奥云湾(Owen Sound);这个只有2.1万人口的小镇觉得，它对本土英雄的名字早有安排，譬如，本地的小型机场早已命名为「奥云湾毕晓普地区机场」(Owen Sound Billy Bishop Regional Airport)。
