美国副助理国务卿约瑟夫·云几天前访问缅甸，面见缅甸外交部长吴温纳貌伦，期
间吴温纳貌伦教授约瑟夫·云正确使用缅甸国名的英语单词。

《缅甸时报》22日援引两人对话记录文本报道，本月18日会面时，吴温纳貌伦告诉
约瑟夫·云，缅甸国名的正确英文单词为“Myanmar”，而不是约瑟夫·云口中的“
Burma”。
“也许你认为这是小事，但‘Myanmar’这个词关乎一个国家的尊严，”吴温纳貌

不去了。最近汽车前轮wheel bearing出了问题，把前轮大卸八块之后，老的wheel
bearing卡在steering knuckle里面出不来，如果有合适的工具，这也就是10分钟的事
。但由于自己家毕竟不是修车铺，在花了2个周末，尝试了无数种办法，夹坏一个台钳
之后，承认自己弄不出来。
于是拿到街上Just Tires修车铺，告知要$100。不是一般的黑，这换个wheel
bearing整个工程也就一两百块左右带part，我让他挤个东西出来就收$100。而且看我
自己会修车，还很嚣张的说这东西没工具自己基本搞不下来，气的我够呛。
突然想在最近在这里有人讨论修车，有人提到过burma motor，说里面人特老实，
回想起来还真是。于是请老爸今天拿去一试，告知$30块，然后两下把老bearing挤下来
，说新的拿来一起给你装了。老爸回家一次拿来新bearing，装好说不对，还有part没
拿。老爸回家二次拿来retaining rings。真可谓不厌其烦。给钱时发现没有零钱，老

Myanmar（1.22《基督教科学箴言报》网站）。这两名词有何不同呢？它们的语源是什
么？
上海辞书出版社1983《外国地名语源词典》426页“缅甸”条说：
“中国古称掸国，唐时称骠国，宋称蒲甘，同时亦称为缅甸。因与中国相距遥远，道路
阻隔，故称之为缅，即遥远之意；又因中缅边区一带称山间谷地为甸，合称缅甸，即遥
远的谷地。英文名Burma，来自得楞语的Brahma，其词源可能与婆罗门或梵文有关。缅
甸人自称巴玛（Bama），梵文作Myamma，意思均为强者，据说这是缅人对自己民族的赞
颂。也有人认为Brahma一名是早期到这里的移民给当地居民起的名称，也是强人的意思

这条释文问题不少，语源说的并不准确。
1 首先说“缅”是表汉语遥远，就好像那是汉人给起的名称了；实际那当然是缅人

国家。十几个来自Burma，近20个来自墨西哥，一个英国，一个俄国，两个中国，三个
印度，一个韩国，两个越南，还有叙利亚，刚果，尼日利亚啥的。目测大部分不是
merit-based，有的拖家带口，有的人英语也说不清楚，不少还是老人，有个走路缓慢
，说话颤抖。不知道这个移民样本是否有代表性？感觉中国人博士毕业找到工作拿个
h1b都很困难，不知道别国的人都咋申请美国公民的。
坐在法官在上面说：你们中有成功的商人，杰出的科学家，爱因斯坦就是你们这样
naturalize的移民。我环视周围觉得非常ironic，不知道法官心里怎么想。我先生说来
自Burma的应该多是难民。奥巴马政府接受了一大批，后面入籍的难民会更多。
我家这公民，努力学习，努力工作，努力交税，辛辛苦苦了十几年才成。我家先生开玩

大概10点，从远处驶来一艘游艇，游艇上最醒目的就是一面巨大的五星红旗
昭示了这将是一次陆海空全方位的战斗
一直到下午圣火点燃，这艘游艇一直在海湾里游弋，
和后来的藏毒、淫权游艇斗争
天上飞机一架接一架，人民的飞机有两袈，敌人的飞机有4架

me he competed with Zhuang at 1961 world championship of Beijing
