autou). While there are some difficulties in the interpretation of vv. 3-4,
the important thing to keep in mind is that the idea of Jesus Christ being
God’s eternal son precedes any thought of his role in salvation history and
the incarnation. He is first of all, the very son of God, before he assumed

question (except, of course, in Galatians where he is constrained to immedia

ans and marks off the “post-Christ’s coming” era—including the ministry
of the Spirit—as a new development in the salvation historical plan of God.

So then, nuni de is not simply a logical connector, as if Paul were saying,

There is a question among commentators as to the precise relationship of cha
pter 5 to the preceding and following material. Does it go with the chapters
before, i.e., 1:18-4:25 or with the chapters that follow in 5:12-8:39? You
will note in the argument section above (under “Background Material and Arg
ument of the Book”) that we have taken the chapter as maintaining stronger
ties to what precedes than to what follows. But this is exactly the point. W
