Jean Christophe,
Jean Christophe
Romain

313 | 5 I do not know about the english version but the chinese version
translated by Fu Lei, in my humble opinion, might not be worse
than any other translated version, if not better.
Translator like Fu Lei is one per one hundred years. I pretty
much appreciate his work. |

magazine, reviews of the new books are overwhelming. They cannot
find time to read those copyright-expired old scrap, :-)
Rolland no longer have book promotion travels, no publisher think it
worthwhile to do promition for him, he's destined to remain his
honorable obscurity. He already yielded the spot to Micheal Crichton
for his new "Prey". |

that throws the novel into oblivion. the value
of a novel, as i see, depends on the intrinsic
tie between culture and the work, that's how
'timeless' comes. there are still some "copyright-
expired old crap" floating around, like Thomas
Mann's Magic Mountain, Proust's Rememberance, etc.
But our old Jean Christophe remains in obscurity. |

b**h 发帖数: 32 | 8 Don't know why you called Proust's Remembrance as a crap. Actually I have read
Christophe but don't like it. It's quite normal that for any novel, some
people like it while others don't. It totally depends on his or her personal
taste. You don't need to denigrate one book just to praise another one.
As for why Jean Christophe is out of print here, one reason is probably due to
its extreme idealism, which does not fly nowadays.
