littletigger, good to have you back... sorry that i mistyped your id.
still one more to go, crim law, on monday.
actually if you have PhD, it's not hard to get clerkship for a fed dist judge
dealing with IP cases, they will love to have you -- check with the career
service at your school. You might also want to try CA, NY, or DC, where most
IP cases are litigated. the down side is that these jobs are free labor.

when i was looking for work, i got hundreds of rejections. rejections are
good -- they toughen you up and make you more motivated.
don't give up the clerkship, it will be a star bullet on your resume. an

the numbers are correct. I know quite a few people who will do public
interest or work for the government, both of which don't pay well. But the
jobs they have can be very exciting. On the other hand, the best students
usually opt for clerkship and eventually become law professors or get paid
big bucks at a private firm.
Compared to MBA students and Medical students, lawyers don't get paid as
well. MBAs easily start above $150K as a consultant, Doctors with specialty
make above $300K normally. I

I thought you were talking about public interest work in general. As of
federal government, I don't know about DOJ, but I had a friend who worked in
HHS who had green card but was not a citizen. In fed government, there are
two types of jobs: contractor and federal employee. You generally don't need
citizenship to be a contractor, except national security related positions.

If you are a citizen, you should try to clerk for Federal judges.
Some law firms offer extra bonus for incoming judicial clerks.
Of course Supreme Court Clerkship is the highest honor for a law student.

2 years at a firm, there is some prestige attached to a clerkship, but it

Now here is why I asked the clerk question:
most foreign law students are either not interested in or not eligible for
clerkships
foreign students should see a somewhat different landscape in law school
ranking
since some schools are ranked high because they produce lots of clerks but
are bad in IP, M/A, etc

Interesting. I am surprised to see that GULC's numbers are lower than I
expected and Vandy's numbers higher. GULC's number is low, probably because
this number does not count # of clerks. At my school (which is a
comparable national school to GULC), we had about 10% of students in my
class taking COA clerkships. Vandy is well respected in the south, and
probably places well in the Atlanta and Texas markets, and to the lesser
extent, DC. UMinn is also a regional school and probably places well

Wish you the best of luck. If you decide to go part-time, try study as a
full-time student.
To finish in three years, you might be thinking of taking some classes
during summers. Still, I recommend you to use the summers to find either
court clerkships or law firm internships. These experience would be far more
worthy than finishing early.

You do know that many Harvard graduates get into public interest or clerk
for judges right after they graduate. Those jobs don't get paid well, but
they are highly desirable for Harvard and Yale students. Harvard has an
excellent loan repayment program that allows its students to do public
interest work.
The average salary of UChicago or UMich is higher than Harvard's precisely
because not many students there are interested in public interest or
clerkship.

But it certainly helps to express your interests once again. If you've

Also, I find it annoying to be called 前辈 most of the time. In Asian
culture, elderly and experienced are respected and honored. But here,
people don't necessarily have a positive reaction when being called older.
Kissing ass in this culture is more subtle. In Asia, deferring to seniors
is always considered respectful; here people might think you just cannot
stand up for yourself. What people do here is exchange ideas freely with
seniors and express their own thoughts, while subtly agreeing

From what I heard: For federal courts in continental US, you need to be a
citizen or from certain kinds of ally countries (China is not one of them).
GC is good for state courts. But you probably don't want to do clerkship in

For internship/externship, you don't need CPT, since you generally will not
be paid as a judicial intern/extern.
Also remember you should be able to get credits toward your J.D. degree by
doing judicial internship/externship.
For clerkship, it depends.

I would say your federal court clerkship is a great plus, either at the
district or circuit level. There are many people with liberal arts
background handling patent litigations, and they often do a great job.
Having said that, a technical background is always looked at favorably by
potential employers.
Going to a lesser-recognized school is risky, but it is not automatically a
death sentence. All boils down to the whole package.
You may also want to try soft IP, like trademark and copyright.
