发帖数: 80 | 2 现在f2，拿到lg附近学校2010 spring的accounting master 。I-20已到手，正准备去
加拿大签证。
学校要求我在修正式的master课程之前补修3门课。琢磨在这里的community college修
。I-20已经到手，所以情况变得比较复杂。问了本地的2所community college，明确了
f2是不能修有credit的课程的，所以只能把身份转过来修。但是问题是我到底拿哪家的
I20转身份呢？
两种假设：
1- 拿原学校的i-20转身份，转完后马上transfer 到community college修完spring
quarter，然后秋季再transfer回去，不知道原学校还要重新申请不？还没读书就转了
，这样可行不？
2- 拿community college 的I-20转身份，补课，同时把原学校的admission defer
到2010 fall? 同时还要要问问学校是否承认偶修的credit. 但是签证也许会有风险，
因为我要补休的课程是undergraduate level的。有本科毕业证的人去读本科学位，在
签证官那里会不 |

want to go this route. There are plenty of stats and admission data under
scrutiny every year. And it's not what happened in california where the
racial pref. is banned. All U.C. schools including private colleges have
been significant increase of Asian student enrollment after race-based
admission is eliminated.

的对的，普通人家的孩子如果情商不高的话，父母硬逼着去上liberal arts college的
话，是有可能把孩子整成废柴的。
如果孩子聪明，情商高，性格好的话，liberal arts college绝对是首等选择。
学费其实不成问题的，这种逼格超一流的学校都是need based financial aid, 你真的
一贫如洗的话，他们只要录取了，就会让你免费读的。 |

住我们问我说是不是registered voter，我说不是，他们就不理我了，然后拦别人让他
们填表啥的。俺看他们搞了很长时间啊... 当时俺就感叹，这帮college kid真有时间
啊，像俺们这种要工作养家糊口的人哪有大把的时间跟他们掺和啊。老稀的支持者估计

所谓顶尖(swarthmore etc.)的那些总人数加在一起恐怕还没有berkeley本科生多
而确有大量学生去的是liberal arts college
楼主说笑话了。
顶尖liberal arts college出來的undergraduate学生，不亚于顶尖国家级大学的毕业
生。
你至少可以去查查这些学校的入学标准吧～～～～～ |

Berkeley的本科有那么好吗？
麻烦你不要拿Swarthmore等的本科生跟Berkeley的本科生比～差太多了。
如果你没有在liberal arts college待过，
就麻烦你多去调查研究，
老毛同志说，不调查就没有发言权。
根据我个人的经验和体会：
liberal arts college排名和national university的排名，在本科教育方面，这俩种
排名是可以对换的。比如，排名15名的LAC，它的本科教育相当于national university
的15名。
但是，这种对换不能一直延伸到80，100名这样的liberal arts college。那种排名的LAC就得为了tuition为尽量招人，而不是更多的在乎名声了。即使如此，100名左右的LAC出來的学生，得到的教育依然要强于普通的州立大学学生。 |

community colleges的讲座。 我understand这种地方value teaching, research他们
不看重。
当时有个高年级的中国人问没有绿卡可不可以申这样的职位，她的回答是you must
have an "authorization to
work" to be eligible for employment.

好一些的package,比如除teaching外还可以做research等等. 但当我问起大概什么时候
才能正式转,Dean说他也不知道,需要一步一步走,但会出一封信写明我们的agreement.

过去的两年多里,面试了大概6所学校.排名从50-180不等,最后一个offer也没拿到.最近
面试了一个南方偏僻小镇的community college, 尽然给offer了,还是tenure-tracked.
我个人感觉是不是进了community college就再也出不来了?工资十二个月,$65K,
teaching load很高,要每星期15contact hours. 那小镇上一好象一个中国人也没有,那
college里也一个外籍faculty也没有.
本人情况,Ph.D.毕业已有六年,有绿卡,文章二十几篇, H-index有12. Industry的机会
也不少, 不过一直舍不得放弃academia,现在年纪大了,孩子也大了,感觉拼不动了,我该... 阅读全帖 |

年，拿到tenure-track 的AP offer了。 我觉得你的背景，完全没有必要去community
college，主要是community college是open enrollment，学生差的一塌糊涂，你可以
想象有多差就有多差，得教最基本的乘除法了。我觉得，你申请的学校排名太靠前了吧
，不如试试小型liberal art，很多这样的学校，teaching会少一些的。Research全凭

本科硕士都不是计算机信息技术的，读博士转过来的，交叉学科，中间拿到cs master
后 咬牙继续读博士 就想做老师 所以一直在系里争取教学的机会 现在找工作 感觉
teaching college 工资有点低
去年candidate 之后就开始投简历
到现在大约投了50封简历
去年年底有一个offer， teaching college AP 4.5万 因为地方太偏远 就拒绝了
这礼拜，面试一个教学型的教职，面完问我希望薪金多少 我说希望70k 对方说 AP 只
有40k 但是因为读博士期间有3年教学经验 可以给我special offer 。。。。我也没有
问special offer 会是多少 因为那个学校的终身教授也就5.5万
下周还有一个面试 今天准备过程中发现年薪大约最多也就在55k 左右 如果有offer谈
谈 可能会再高一点
想请教下版内的faculty们 如果进了 teaching college 是不是暑假很难有grant 或者
其他赚钱的机会
有没有可能暑假找到活做啊 不然工资 太低了 以后还要自己买房结婚什么的。。。。
。

的，因为需要很好的口语和随机应变能力，其实就是新东方各位教员的嘴皮子功夫。这
种soft skill在中国是不培养的，至少大多数postdoc不会，所以只有挤研究性大学一
条路。 |

teaching 和community colleges的竞争一点也不低，而且倾向于招毕业不是太久with
(college) teaching experience的。很少会要千年。更重要的是，象BME这类major，
只有很少CC有这个系。你要是neuroscience，最相近的可能是biology或psychology，
但人家更喜欢直接要biology或psychology毕业的。看重的是你读书选过哪些课，而不
是研究的哪些课题。有时侯我都想，别说教你这门课，我写你这门课的教科书都行。人
家就是不要。 |

该房间在一个private house内，由小院子，你还可以种种花草，离queens college大
概2分钟walk，泊车很容易，四周环境很安静。
Basement,房间虽小，但五脏俱全，基本上你带上你的基本行李即可入住，房内有一张
床，2个厚床垫，被子枕头，2张书桌，一张小桌，一个衣柜，一个书柜，有一小窗，一
