我在重读英国中古史，亦即12世纪的威廉征服者（William The Conquer）之后的几个
王朝（有一句玩笑话：所谓“现代”是自己出生之后，“近代”是曾祖父出生之后，在
那之前都算“中古”），目前还只读到蔷薇战争（Wars of the Roses，请注意英文的
原文里，Wars是复数，所以精确的翻译应该是“蔷薇战争系列”才对） 。
我之所以会选择这个阅读题材，除了天生喜欢读历史之外，更重要的是因为英国的王朝
在世界政治历史上算是一个特别稳定而长寿的异数：八百多年来，虽然有好几次所谓的
朝代更替，实际上只不过是外甥取代儿子当国王，国体（亦即封建体系）和统治阶级都
没有经过重大的变动。一直到21世纪，英国上院的贵族们仍然可以追溯祖先800多年到
