The symbol was originally designed in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, co-
founder of the modern Olympic Games. According to Coubertin, the ring
colours with the white background stand for those colors that appeared on
all the national flags that competed in the Olympic games at that time. Upon
its initial introduction, Coubertin stated the following in the August,
1912 edition of Olympique:

李爱锐（Eric Henry Liddell, 1902-1945）的父母，是英国伦敦会差到中国的宣教士
James & Mary Liddell。他们夫妇初被差往内蒙古传道，因为义和团事件，撤退到上海
，他们的长子罗柏（Robert Victor），于1899年十月二十三日生在那里；及至乱事过
了，于1902年一月十六日，在天津生下了第二个儿子，取名为 Henry Eric Liddell；
在预备去登记的时候，途中遇到一个宣教士朋友，听了告诉那新父亲：这样的名字在学
校会给孩子受嘲笑，因为简写 HEL，跟 HELL（地狱）相近。父亲马上改过来，成为
Eric Henry Liddell，中文名字李爱锐。
1906年，他们第一次休假，准备回苏格兰。从报纸上读到哈斯威勒（Wyndham
