小泡泡填了7所学校，被HYPS 全拒。被一所二流私立，UCB及州立的Honor Program 录
取。平常豁达宽心的小泡泡（希望有机会去S 大学）前天有点沮丧，现有好转，开始好
好考虑下步的路。这不又为同学电脑免费出诊去了。
此事上少有焦虑和动容的太太，这两天也有点不自在。愿她会很快淡忘此事。
小泡泡绝不是天才和顶聪明的孩子，但俺也相信他不是一个笨蛋和弱者。下面将俺能想
到的他的申请失败之处列出，是自责不是开脱自己，愿对其他家长们有用。俺尽量客观
，但难免个人的心态和偏见。大家要砸要骂要提建议要分析原因，俺都接受和感谢。
客观失误：
1． 数学和Academic 不是很强
2． 与 Counselor 的关系不是最佳
3． 科技老师的推荐信可能不是最好
4． 九，十年级的暑期大都旅游和在家玩过去了，未学其他AP课（我们无知）
5． 作文可能不切题，就一，两篇翻改
6． H 早期决定被延期后没足够重视（目标S），圣诞和元旦期间外出返家后（1/5）才
匆匆在1/10 日截止前完成其它学校的申请

徐小姐保释回家之后，
[ 这里省去500字， 因为那房子里发生了什么事，老夫一无所知， 不作任何猜测]。。
。。。
今天徐小姐恢复上班。而且是老板请回去的。请回去的，你们知道吗?
过程是这样:
徐小姐被逮捕后，他们Division马上开紧急会议决定，所有主管不对外接受采访，
一切按现行州政府行政法规程序处理。研究结果是，事情不在工作单位，不在上班
时间，在徐小姐法院判决之前，她还是单位雇员。马上恢复上班。由老板打电话请
回。
徐小姐人老实，人缘好，出勤好，老板很满意。加上工作多，单位根本不准备开她。
倒是徐小姐面子过不去，在老板请后第三天才回来。
早上老板给一个大hug，并表示要帮她请counselor。今天还是带的饭，估计是她妈
准备的。去微波炉热饭都是低着头。看来还是打击不小。但好像可以跨过去。

有真凭实据地一两次后，医生不是很难找到工作的问题，而是不能再兴医的问题。
而且检测我给你们再说些具体数据：
很多检测其实是医院，实验室等等互通的，有的作这个有的作那个，最后其实测量的
cost非常低。
比如验尿，其实大概也就100元左右，但是经过医院order, 中间手续后这个价格就是
600了。
比如验血，其实最基本也就400， 多测点很多都顺便测了，但是能给你一项项加起来上
1500-2000。
更可怕的是这些都是天天测，picu有的时候一天连续测几次，。。。 你算算这个费用
。尤其是血和尿，变量。。。
这些加起来之后就是10万上下了，其他的贵的一次大概3万，比如surgical pathology
，。。。
可是最有说服力的基因检测，外面做收费9K, 医院大概也就只能加个取血的费用。如果
自己找公司自己测一个基因，大概是$2500, 如果测一系列，比如尿素循环也就是$3500
, 而已知蛋白全部测序只需要9K。这个测试是一次性，不但如此以后有新的测试不需要

几人，那年名额都是富家子。
看看现在人家拼不过大捐款家长，又拼不过比他好的亚裔，只好与成绩比他差点的学生

命喊叫我那么优秀，你必须录我，你不录就是歧视，因为我是黄皮肤。问题是在AO眼中
那些成绩差点的有其他更吸引人的亮点。
记得有一年一亚男SAT2390,大家觉得很好了，但他更考了一次得了2400。人家还个无数
个全国大奖呢，果然横扫名校，最后去了H.

过了８０小时（申请材料里各项课外活动都要填你每周花多少时间），让人不能相信。
还有一种可能是essay和申请表格里添的内容矛盾。再有一种可能是报了发表的论文，
结果人家一查论文里没有他的名字。以上几条都给人觉得不诚实。也可能是essay里有
意无意的表达了对比如黑人的歧视（比如说：我辅导的孩子都是黑人，所以辅导他们我
付出了
特别多的努力）。说者无心，听者有意。还有一种可能是counselor推荐信说了坏话。
interview也可能出差错。比如interview的回答和履历里写的不一致。但鉴于那么多学
校都没有录取，我觉得这个不是主要问题。
当然这些可能一个都不符合那孩子，就是举几个例子而已。
短板和硬伤是两码事。比如文科差一点是短板，数学差一点是短板，leadership不够是
短板，没有竞赛得奖也是短板。但这些对录取的影响都有限。你占了几项都还可能被
HYPMS录取。我上面举的几个例子都是硬伤。你占了一条就可能被否决，即使你的其他
方面都很强。 |

薛紫梦，就读于美国马萨诸塞州波士顿地区沃尔瑟姆镇的布兰戴斯大学（BRANDEIS
UNIVERSITY）。
8年前在万国击剑邂逅了击剑运动，从此击剑成为她生活里密不可分的一部分。
