group 1 (My CAT 5 age group got split into two groups for safety reasons.
My field was about 40-50 people.) At the whistle, the pack started moving
quickly. At lap 1, we were moving at about 24 mph. My HR quickly got to
the high 170's.
This time I felt more confident at the corners. I was able to not only keep
pedaling through the turns, but also to accelerate out of them. This

because everyone feels more confident after the first two races in the past
weeks. we averaged above 25 mph, topped at just above 30mph.
i did something fun today -- i lead the whole pack for half a lap in lap 1.
man that felt good. i felt like a star when i set the cornering course for
the entire pack -- and it was a tight one.

the pack moves a lot faster than the previous training races. the course is
also way more technical. it's a 1 mile loop with two S-shaped turns. The
first one is really, really tight.
at the whistle, the pack immediately jumped to 25 mph and quickly picked up
to 26+mph. It's at least 2mph faster than the previous races. Also, since
the whole road is blocked, the pack is much looser and more dynamic this

around you. if the guy is not smooth and can't ride a straight line,
chances are his bike handling skills are lacking, so stay away from him.
especially, avoid riding behind him. it's even worse if there are two rough
guys riding back to back in front of you.
another point is to avoid overlapping wheels. if something happens or if
the guy in front suddenly slows down, you can steer out of the pace line
into the win |

rollers, managed to hang with the pack for the first lap, behind a tall guy.
Then at the end of lap 1, the pack dropped the hammer for KOM, and I blew
up right on the top. Never had a chance to recover, and saw the pack slowly
pulling away. Ended up working with three other guys to finish the race.
Placed 40 out of 46.
Went to a crit today. Race starts at 8am, 35 minutes over a technical one-
mile course, with one S-tu |

a corner in a crit at 30 mph. Who know’s how safe that unmarked Kuota
really is? Did it pass final inspection? What it a reject that someone snuck
out the door? Not something that I would want to find out at the wrong

three days later when the doctors explained everything to me.
Now thinking through the accident, I should have braked with both wheels and
shifted by crotch behind the seat, or simply ridden/bunny hopped over the
guy who went down.
In the future I will try to brake with my right hand, as well as the left,
so that in emergency I don't only brake with the front wheel. I will keep
racing in road races and TTs, but not crits |

crashing with the 4/5s, instead of doing some real racing with people of
similar capabilities?
The problem with 4/5 crits is, there are too many people who are not very
smooth and technical, but they have the power and testosterone. Put these
guys in a race, granted someone will make a dumb move and cause a crash.

i like stiff frames. the caad9 frame is one of the stiffest aluminum frame
around. it used to be the standard crit frame. |

money and I don't want to lose 3k like that. if I can't win a race, I doubt
an expensive bike is gonna help me that much. nonetheless, I don't think it
's worth it.
but I can justify training on a good durable carbon frame because I spend 99
% of my riding training, not racing. and a good carbon frame is more
comfortable and rewarding than a good Alu frame, which I think is a perfect
material for road/crit racing. |

and RRs after my near-fatal crash. Right now, strictly TTs and tri's :) My
best 10mile TT so far is 24'45.
There are plenty of training plans out there. The bottom line is,
consistency, consistency, consistency. Pretty much any training plan would
work, as long as it has some macro and micro cycles planned out. General
rule is: winter long slow base miles, spring/summer race/high performance. |
