美利坚合众国第二百四十个独立节之日，重温了一下当时美国立国时杰弗逊起草的《独
立宣言》。
每读一次就不得不再次感慨当时立国之父们的英明及远见。他们在北美这块土地上，抛
弃了大不列颠的君王统治，建立起美利坚这样一个伟大的国家。
一切似乎都是上帝赐予的：这块土地上不仅有雄伟壮观的东部阿普拉契山脉及西部的落
基山脉，而且有着从广袤无际的大草原到美丽宽阔的大海洋，这富绕的土地难道不是一
种恩赐吗？是的，不过上帝恩赐给地球的土地也不仅限于美利坚，算算美利坚的土地面
积，即使现在也只位于全球第三或第四，为何美利坚却成了人们向往的地方呢？
作为移民，也许比这儿生长的美国人有更多的比较。一个感悟是当年《独立宣言》的基
石，即人人生而平等（all men are created equal)，天赋给个人的权力等不能受到侵

看Bowen自己的回忆1947年Marine的分队在一个秦皇岛的营地被共军包围了，共军要求
他们投降，Marine坚持了一晚上后成功撤离。有少数Marine之前出去喝啤酒被共军俘虏。
Bowen他们夜里挖了很多散兵坑，其中一个挖到了一箱子骨头，但夜里很吓人他们就把
箱子又埋上了。
1941年太平洋战争开始前北京协和医院把北京人头盖骨的箱子给撤离的Marine带走，运
往秦皇岛计划上米国军舰，但期间战争爆发，军舰搁浅，Marine成了日军俘虏，头盖骨
箱子下落不明。后来看估计是被仓促埋在了秦皇岛的营地 （Camp Holcomb）。

Butler Fork是个四通八达的trailhead,从这里可以到Circle All Peak, Mt Raymond,
Gobblers Knob. 如果到了和Desolation trail交口的地方往东可以到dog lake,
Reynolds Peak,还可以连到big water, little water trail，总之很方便。我们这周
的目的地是Gobblers Knob. Gobblers Knob标高10246 feet,是MillCreek和Big
Cottonwood Canyon 之间的最高点 (其实就比Mt Raymond高了5feet)。从trailhead开
始到山顶往返全长8 mile 多一点，超过3500尺的elevation gain.
Trail开始的半麦是在山谷里沿着溪水走，再加上边上很多的树，很是凉爽宜人。离开
溪水后的大部分路程也不是很晒，特别是还要路过几大片杨树林,估计到了秋天的时候
会特别漂亮。到了Baker Pass后就没什么树了,不过好在离山顶也不远了.
