If you are operating a data center, such that a failure could result in
massive loss, then you should go SAS (no matter it's the 7k2 or 15k version)
. A SAS raid is a charm to manager - all you need is to check the lights
regularly (can be done remotely) and replace drive when there is a yellow
light by giving a call to Dell (native speaker answers in 1 minutes).
For the $230 SATA AHCI, I feel it's a bit reluctant - when not buy a disk

不得其法。今晚终于发现了解决办法。原来我这个新
装的系统，如果查上一个USB flash drive的话，它
在Storage Volumes下加了一个Unknown Device (这个
还没有搞清楚是为什么，估计也搞不清楚了 :), 如果
我把这个device给uninstall掉， 然后拔掉drive
重新插入， 系统就可以识别而且加一个新的盘在
Portable Devices下面。 而且下次这个盘再插入的
话也不会有问题。 但是就是有问题的drives（包括
俺的Kindle）都要这么搞一下。。。 |

the program or reading lots of data from hard drive when gaming
failure rate is about twice as much as traditional hard drive, about 2%.
some brand has firmware issue and may not work well
if you have a big budget, try it. otherwise wait until it's cheaper |

）因为没有其他的台式机可以换硬盘，所以想死马当活马医，买个enclosure装成
external hard drive试试。
想请教：台式的都是3.5"的吧？买hard drive enclosure有什么要注意的吗？是不是只
要买个hard drive enclosure就可以了啊，cable是一起对么？
还想求教一下，这东西多有deal的时候吗？还是说同一款大概都是一个价钱呀。不同款
价格差好多，一般在哪里买比较好呢？

SSD里面没有disk，但也是一种drive，可以取代Hard Drive，所以叫SSD也没有啥不妥 |

要叫disk首先得是圆形的。就算不考虑形状限制，因为自带控制器，类比hard disk
drive，最多可以叫solid state disk drive。这也从另一方面说明drive有一定合理性

1. Make sure your BIOS can boot from USB drive.
2. Install any Linux distribution you like.
3. Choose carefully where you want to install the boot loader. There might
be some tricks to play here. If you boot from CD, and install to USB
driver,
versus you boot directly from your USB drive. The device name in BIOS for
USB drive might be different. So your grub.conf installed by installer

After I open an excel(07) file from a network drive and do some
modification, I can't save it back to the network drive. It always fails.
However I can "save as" it back to the network drive with a different
name.
I googled it but found no exact solution, but it looks like it is the
antivirus software problem. Any idea? |

虽然数据考上了, 可是只要 unmount USB drive再 mount 上就发现
上次写的数据就没有了.
或者拔掉后会发现其实所由的操作都是假的. 这个 USB drive 在其它计算机上
linux 或者 windows 下都工作.

I have some problems with removing the external usb hd using "Safely
Remove the Drive" on the system tray.
Sometimes, a pop-up window says "Can not stop the drive because
another applciation is accessing it", even after I close ALL applications.
Is there anyway to figure out which program/process is using the drive
? Or other solution to this problem.
Both my XP Home and XP Pro have this problem.

Actually, when boot from Win 98 DOS, it shows C: for the flash drive. After
you run winnt, the installer will copy files to your flash drive and restart
. Then you will see an option of install/upgrade your system. All left is
the same as installation from CD. C: is then given to local disk instead of
flash drive, and you can also format it.
But one comment for this HP util. You should disconnect all other usb HDs

4-5年的笔记本电脑，有点慢，但上网，pdf没问题，有两个分区，用partition magic
重新分配free space，不成功(fail... hard drive problem...no changes made)。重
启后，慢的几乎什么也做不了，于是就想把最近的文件从D:drive考出来，慢的没法操
作。再重启，黑屏显示硬件信息 "Pri master status BAD。。。press F1 to resume."
于是想重装xp, 选择了"deleted C: partition", "create a new partition", "
install XP in this partition", then "Format C:". 问题来了 "format failed due
to hard disk failure". 又试了分成小区，还是format不行
现在没了windows，XP只能测到C: (new (raw)), D: drive, xxx MB, free space
xxxMB.

Windows启动后除了显示一下Windows XP的Logo外即进入永久死循环,且无法用其OneKey
Rescue Systen button拯救。初步判断需重装Windows。因机子不带CDROM drive，重
装无法入手。试过一下UBS drive，无反应。Frustrating中。。。

Drive下的子目录也可以看到，但无法打开这些子目录，说我没有Permission去看，让
我去找Administrator联系，但其实我两台电脑都没有设置User，全是默认的
Administrator开机的。我Google了很多网站，包括消除密码登入等，但都没有用。有

今天为Palouse Care Food Drive做义工，收集donation。一路边敲各家各户的门，一
边感慨，这活动和住院医申请面试还很多相通之处呢，值得在日记里记录两笔。
因为正值面试季，干脆放在麦地和各位同学分享。听故事放松一下。：）
这个Food Drive是每年一次的，我们地区最大规模的，是在社区挨家挨户食品收集的行
动。因为是两个相邻的大学城一起行动，来做义工领地图的大学生们，成群地结着伴，
排的长队非常壮观。我做为Community volunteer不用排队，直接领地图，主管几条街
就行了。实话讲，这是我第一次参加直接敲门收集donation的活动，还真不知从哪里开
始的好。放眼一望，也没有像我这样YOG的同行。正想着，不行就硬着头皮，单干吧。
毕竟还是有点儿经验，以前作为家长，看着儿子小童子军挨家挨户为Food Bank工作过
。摸着石头过河也能过去，不过，有人领着，应该会少走些摸摸索索的时间。不甘心，
接着放眼望一望。终于，看到一位年龄相仿的community volunteer，似乎也是个体户

我想建立一个libname在一个mapped drive 上（其实就是一个其他机器在网络上共享的folder里），这个drive已经是可读写的。
但是用的时候可以从上面读dataset，就是不能写入，不能建立任何dataset，log里报i/o错误。
不知道有没有人有类似经验和方法？
