college. Ask Americans to read it for typos/mistakes before you finalize it.
Do not assume that every one in the team will dig into your research
proposal or teaching statement. It is another way to elaborate yourself.

有些英语母语的人也不见得写的东西就好，
去年发的一篇文章，中间一段是合作组的一个英国postdoc写的，
我觉得应该没问题，就没怎么注意，
结果就那段被批，再看，果然不行。
原来老板，英文自然没有任何问题，
但我发现他写科技文章还是不够凝练，
就是说，科技文章庸俗化，平民化，

proposal". It is basically means "not competitive". If none of the three
reviewers gives you a rating higher than "Good", you will end up with a "
triage".

在我们专业top journal的一篇文章非常相似。文章的研究问题和数据
分析方法和我以前的文章完全相同，用的数据也是同一个national study
的，只是这篇文章的数据是更新的一个cohort的数据（这个national study
重复同样的数据收集，只是跟踪不同的样本cohorts）。 文章从abstract,
literature review, method, 到discussion, 基本感觉重复我的writing，
连文章的结构什么的都特别类似。作者的英文写作功底很好，除了有几处特别
明显的几乎是整段的抄袭，其他很多地方就是把我文章里的观点和写作重新
组合一下 （有的地方elaborate 一下）。他们也引用了我的文章，但提得
很模棱两可，回避两篇文章有相同的问题，相同的方法，只是数据更新些。
我的那篇文章经过了很严格的review, 修改了很多遍，所以相对很成熟。
我可以大概猜到是谁写的，在同一个field里很多年了。但我之前想不到他会这样。

微多解释两句，elaborate一下。这talk一般给的是酣畅淋漓，给完后觉着自己牛逼大
发了。但是，在做物理的人的地方，或者在做表面比较多人的地方，tmd这talk就无法
不被打断地给下去。各种古怪的问题，让人发指。但是，我最酣畅的一次talk是在top
2当着一帮做物理人面前给的。 |

一 引言
自从一九八○年代中期以来，笔者有机会在数所大学和研究院里任教、作研究或参与短
期学术交流项目。这些大学和研究院分别属于三个华人社会——香港、中国大 陆和台
湾，及两个西人社会——美国和澳大利亚。本文便是基于我在这些教育和学术机构里讲
解社会理论和比较社会学时对学生的观察和思考。在行文讨论中，我会 作两个层次上
的比较：把华人学生与西方学生进行比较，和把不同华人社会里的学生进行比较。前一
层次上的比较有助于凸现在非西方社会及文化背景下成长起来的 华人学生，在接受西
方社会科学过程中遭遇的一系列特定的困难。后一层次上的比较则有助于我们更仔细及
深入地分辨出这些特定的困难之根源何在。这里所说的 “学生”是广义的，包括社会
科学的新从业者。
简要说来，这些特定的困难有三方面的根源。其一是语言性质的 (linguistic，包括翻
译技术) 。有一些西方社会科学的概念和术语，很难在中文里找到对等物，即便被费力

电话里回答问题，看不见对方，已经很紧张了。如果既要兼顾内容，又要担心语法错误
和口音的话，负担会很重。其实你是中国人，这个人家都知道。没了英语的负担会好很
多。尤其是别人期待你elaborate的那种问题，你就想象自己是在这里发帖就好了。
两个要诀：1，不要急着回答，说话时前想一想，再讲就会好很多。这不是语言问题，
