1. 四大的晋升机制比较routine，double promotion的情况也有，但是需要p的大力支
持。除非是四大跳四大，否则进来先被downgrade，或者从entry-level做起，相当于重
零开始。
2. 四大谈不上work&life balance，work is life, life is work。如果已经适应了
industry 节奏，恐怕要调整一段时期才能适应四大的节奏。
3. 我唯一可以理解楼主的，是因为有cpa执照，这个在firm里的确是更valuable，如果
可以学以致用，那么也只有在firm里才能广泛接触到各行各业的财务案例。

发帖数: 70 | 6 当然可行。即使你想申top firm也不是完全不可能。但是有几个问题你要想明白：
1. 你说喜欢MC，到底是喜欢什么？如果没有那么好的pay你还喜欢吗？很多second tie
r firm pay不了M/M/B那么高。比如lek/campbell alliance/sg2等等这个级别的fresh
phd基本也就是十万，有些还到不了。工作也挺辛苦的。而且也没有你想象得那么有趣。
对于phd来说很多时候challenge所在和你的兴趣会有mismatch。除了少数strategy的项
目以外，其他项目你可能会觉得很boring，用不上太多大脑。
2. 你说积累经验什么的。要知道这一行从second tier跳到first tier的情况是比较罕
见的。当然不是没有，但是不是有代表性的career path.
3. Exit strategy要打听清楚。入了行觉得不合适或者有了家以后比较疲倦的话很可能
最终还是要回到corporate
4. 如果真的想申请现在多参加一些学校里的consulting club，做一些真正的项目，感
受一下自己是不是真的喜欢。 |

er可能此second tier非彼second tier吧？我比较了解的是healthcare这方面的second
tier。楼主的背景进这些firms还是很有可能的。很多firm需要生物/医学背景phd，但
是entry level薪水比mbb少，track也略和mba有差。mck和bcg招的phd如果在北美的话和
mba一样起薪。bain招得少不详。四大的那些consulting我就不了解乐。

儿second tier比mbb好申多了。但是确实career path也差多了。second tier firm比起
去corporate我个人感觉就没有什么吸引力了。
但是他们确实是需要phd的，有针对phd的career track。因为healthcare这个sector比
较特殊吧。像你说的德勤之类的四大和埃森哲之类的firm确实不需要phd，phd不容易去
或者说去了位置也比较尴尬（没有第一手资料纯属推测）。

as a career path is the trajectory, especially the first
few years. It might not be as steep and well-defined in the
2nd tier or boutique firms as in mbb, but still much more
exciting than in corporate. But the down side is pretty
obvious, too. Long hours is the most frequently mentioned
one. But to me the biggest disadvantage is that it's much
harder to shine in a consulting firm than, say, an R&D dept

100K。
这个起薪比起市场好的时候EE/CS的FRESH PHD能拿到的OFFER没有什么吸引力，所以LAW
FIRM里面EE/CS的PHD比较少。但是从工资增长的POTENTIAL来讲，在LAW FIRM比在一般
TECH COMPANY里会高不少。
这个一样是要看SUPPLY/DEMAND，比如说SCIENCE的PHD多，EE/CS的PHD少(一个是绝对数
量少，另一个是待遇并不COMPETITIVE)，后者找PATENT AGENT就容易些，起薪也可能会
高一些。另外，灵活性应该也大一些，不象ASSOCIATE，大家都是160K。

big law firm, he should still have time to call you or setup a coffee break
or happy hour somewhere.
On the flip side, how did you make yourself available to him? If he gets
off work at 3am in the morning, will he be able to see you?
The relationship needs understanding and compromise from both sides. But if
this is real, it'll work out. It is not true that big law firm lawyers can
't have a loving relationship. |

someone outside the firm as a big law associate. We have no life outside the
law firm. I go to work around 8:30 in the morning and go home after 10pm (
usually from 9pm to 2am, it varies),and when I am home, I am so tired so I
usually take a shower and immediately go to bed. |

choice is between those two firms' NY office.
Thompson is a 2nd tier player in TX while Shearman is a V15 firm.
Hours is longer at Shearman for sure(definitely less than 70-80 hours)but
pay is better.
Working at Thompson might give you a less miserable life. |

There are still many exit options, like keep working at the same firm and
get promoted to counsel if you wont make partner.
Or you can choose lateral move to other firm, especially you dont mind go
back to China.
Or become an in-house counsel.
Or try to get a job at the government or DOJ if you are in litigation dept,
although it's rare for Chinese JD/LLM. |

partners with business with companies in china, or partners also graduated
from your school. Connection is the key. Send your CV and writing sample
to them directly. Otherwise if you 找到这类job opening的信息, your CV will
go to human resource and sit there for months.

I think in other field, there is no so called tech specialist.
Tech specialist in IP law firm has similar billing hour requirement and
similar billing rate as a first year associate. However the salary is much
less than the first year associate. Law firms already take advantage of
that, so they are willing to provide tuition for their tech specialists.

有一个jj曾经很兴奋得给我打电话，说听人说做patent attorney只需要本科得
technical学位，然后有law school学位，她
10年前读得是mechanical engineering得本科，之后一直做sales，是不是也可以进
firm做tech specialist，然后去读law
school。我只能说，可能，但是可能性很小。
虽然最近各个firm招人都放缓了，但还是有recruiter不断打来电话得，说明机会还是
有的。

How about Phd in chemistry or biology?
I have tried to apply for technical advisor positions last year. A recruiter
even helped me to write CV. But there were very few openings. The recruiter
only landed one onsite interview for me in a big firm, but there was no
response from the firm afterwards.
In the end, the recruiter told me that the job market for technical advisor
is not good; she had to quit.
This is Northern CA. It might be better in east coast? |
