Hankow was the city of sleek taipan fat cats, with their tennis and wood oil
, bridge parties and cotton piece goods, golf and hog bristles, paper chases
and duck egg albumin, masquerades and wolfram. There were cabarets, clubs
galore and orderly, well-laid out foreign-style, river-front settlements.
On Nov. 4 1936, G. H. Thomas writes:

子赔款，以及辛丑条约当中涉及德国的，对中国的种种“惩罚”，并归还租界，等等。
涉及德国对华直接赔款的问题，其实没有明说。只是在133条里面提到，在中国的德国
产业和侨民财产，（如果已被没收或洗劫），德国不得要求归还，德国侨民如果战时被
中国政府侵犯人权，也不许再悲愤（原文都是法律辞令，我这个翻译很粗略，版上学法
律的大牛可以来出手精译一下）。这也许就算是“赔款”。事实上，凡约这个东东，是
要立大牌坊的，即便是德国对英法的赔款，在书面上也是一笔一笔算出来的，比如哪里
毁了我东西，哪里花了我的军费，而不是直接拍脑袋说个数再讨价还价。
从上面讨论的条款来看，英法显然居心不良，德国不直接赔钱给中国，反倒默许中国去洗
劫德国侨产，成心让两国把梁子结大；但德国在广州的租界，英法却要分一杯羹。中国
也不是傻子，自然不太高兴，后来英法又要把山东利益给日本，以至中国无法在条约上
签字（说句可能招致小将攻击的话，其实五四运动也没有土共宣传当中那么神奇，中

之汉口者，贸易年额一亿三千万两，夙超天津，近凌广东，今也位于清国要港之二，将
近而摩上海之垒，使观察者艳称为东方之芝加哥。”同时代美国一个杂志介绍汉口时，
新闻标题直接就是“Hankow——The Chicago of China”。大概就是从这个时候开始，
“东方芝加哥”的名号就传开了。其实在当时看来，不仅是经济实力、产业重点很像芝
加哥，汉口的地理位置、山形水势等等确实都很像芝加哥。
