这位备受争议但极具影响力的政治家表示，他将在9月14日的民主党代表选举中与菅直人展开竞争。小泽一郎此举向外界展示出，自从执政党民主党去年9月在历史性大选中掌权以来，内部充斥着严重分歧。
在与日本前首相鸠山由纪夫(Yukio Hatoyama)会面后，小泽一郎表示：“我决定参加竞选……前首相鸠山由纪夫已表示，他愿意全面支持我。”

本下一任首相的铁定人选菅直人(Naoto Kan)强调了美日关系的重要性，将之称为日本
外交政策的“基轴”。这暗示他不会撤回最近两国间达成的、让一个大型美军基地留在
冲绳岛的协议。
但在一场宣布竞选首相的新闻发布会上，现任财务大臣的菅直人也强调了中国对日本的
重要性，称中日关系与美日关系“同样重要”。在经济政策上，菅直人没有提出什么具
体计划，但他讲明，不一定会把经济增长置于财政纪律之先。菅直人极有可能接替周三
突然辞职的鸠山由纪夫(Yukio Hatoyama)。
菅直人说，他会采取重大而持续的措施，减轻南方冲绳岛因容纳美军基地而产生的负担

鸠山由纪夫表示，作为一个日本人，感到有责任向死难者道歉。“即使只有一个中国平
民被日军粗暴杀害，这样的行为也不能以战时发生为借口。” 鸠山2013年年初曾到访
江苏南京的南京大屠杀纪念馆，从照片中看到日军在南京城内杀害无辜平民，读到当时

鸠山由纪夫公开承认，普天间(Futenma)空军基地的大部分功能都将留在冲绳县辖区。
