nationwide. However someplaces, like all 5 boroughs in NYC and a couple of
districts in Long Island (Hewlett/woodmere, Roslyn for instance), have
public pre-k (one more year of free public education for 4-year-olds).

pre-k, and all the rest of the grades, for that matter, varies by districts.

这个周末有幸参拜了远近闻名的公立百年老校Lowell High School. Lowell 不仅在旧
金山首屈一指，在加州也是名列前茅。Lowell的校园不很显眼，紧挨着一片老旧的居民
区。校园不大，却有2700名学生。一进正门，右手贴着满墙的著名校友的照片。我浏览
了一下，还真是名不虚传啊：有最高法院大法官Stephen Breyer，加州州长Pat Brown
（现任州长Jerry Brown的爹），Gap的创始人Donald Fisher，HP创始人之一Hewlett，
诺奖得主迈克尔逊，Cornell和Erlanger，耶鲁大学校长Levine。当然也有不少现代的
没那么知名的。但是满墙的照片，华人面孔的却很有限。按理说学校的学生一大半是华
人，榜上有名的总该不少吧。
这个世界其实是个大家抢西瓜的世界，这些榜上有名者都是抢到了西瓜的人。谁抢到了
西瓜，大家看得见，摸得着，粉他，听他的。这就是影响力，这就是leadership。可惜
大部分华人孩子练的是捡芝麻的绝活。这个绝活可以练得精熟，却在抢西瓜的游戏里用
不上。

大家都听说过很多startup公司从车库起家，包括Google, HP之类（wait a minute,
let me take in this Hewlett-Packard moment...)，也知道现在很多中小公司开始就
把网站放在云上。哪种方法好，看具体情况了。我见过把全部程序放在云上的公司，也
见过从一开始就把所有服务器放在办公室，后来建了自己的数据中心，从来没有把东西
放在云上的公司（我就在这样的公司干过，哈哈）。
就我个人而言，目前主要考虑的是两个方面，一个是专用带宽/存储空间，另一个是网
管的灵活性。自己建一个mini datacenter听着似乎比较crazy，但是可以保证专用带宽
，一个是对外的带宽，Verizon可以到300M/300M。一个是内网带宽和网络配置。对
Hadoop集群的性能调优来说，由于有大量的硬盘读写和网络I/O，如果自己能够掌握硬
盘和内网的配置和带宽，我感觉比云上要方便得多。现在的Hadoop集群我限制在一个子
网内，10G的交换机说换上就换上了。另外一个是存储空间可以随意扩展（比如现在我
