Picking the hardest race on Earth was a little tricky. Of course, a full
iron-distance has to be tougher than a 70.3 race, but we wanted our winner
to have the toughest, not necessarily the longest, course. With that in mind
it was hard to pick anything other than Maryland’s Savageman Triathlon (
need to talk about how to lead into “vignettes”)

and it was exactly a ride in the postal team car on alpe d'huez(?) for the
VP of Nike and seeing what cycling truly is that landed the huge Nike deal
for the team and Nike's long term support for the Armstrong cause.

If the race goes all the way to the top, the last 4.5 miles will feature
18 switchbacks and an average gradient of 10 percent. Organizers think
this road won't be as vulnerable to the fall/winter elements as the way to
Big Bear. Looks as if the race finally has itself a difference-maker.
Amateurs will be able to ride the route several weeks before in an event
similar to "L'Etape du Tour," a Tour de France tradition.

Alpe d'Huez有过之而无不及，又是今年Tour of California的Queen Stage. 受到老狼
的秃头山骑行报告系列的鼓舞，我一直向往的紧。
最近终于有机会开车去南加，于是事先联系了老狼。周六早上我在I-5开车的时候就有
点打鼓，因为 10点多气温已经是 80多度了 。这时我便知道下午的骑行必然困难
重重。
下午2点半我到达约定集合地点。老狼早已到了。收拾停当，我还傻呵呵问了一句要带
arm warmer么，事后才知道这是多么可笑。最后是2:45pm出发，温度是93度。
一开始是一段相对比较平坦的路，但是我估计也有4-5%的坡度。我一开始就用小盘骑。
老狼用大盘在前面。老狼越骑越快，我可不敢强跟。距离拉开了有100米。我本着能上
去就是胜利的原则，远远的吊着。很快就到了一个大坡。一开始我还期望用34x28骑，
结果发觉很容易就out of breath了。这可是头一两mile啊，以前从来没发生过的事情

呀！不过他还是输给Armstrong了。

2004）的 Alpe d'huez TT 我记得能到 450 watts 以上。这个我连一分钟都撑不下来

L'Alpe d'Huez is average at 7.9% with maximum at 11%.
For me, I cannot even run up a 11% climb which only last for 0.2 mile... I
know I am not good. =( |
