A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Sachin Velankar
in the
Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. That is for a
standard
position (minimum one year, hopefully two). The overall research direction
is to
examine the role of particles adsorbed at the interface between immiscible
liquids -
either small molecule liquids or immiscible polymer melts. The nature of
the
research is highly experimental. Expertise in colloids, polymers,

For many liquid-liquid systems with sufficiently high boiling points, you
WILL see a critical temperature (where ΔG=0 so Tc=ΔHmix/ΔSmix) above
which the two liquids are always miscible in each other and below which they
are immiscible.

代人post几道题,请版上的大腕们在百忙中帮解解,事先感谢! (请解释why)
1. Which reagents produce a gas when combined?
I. HCl and Na2SO3
II. NaOH and Al
(A) I only (B) II only
(C) Both I and II (D) Neither I nor II
2. Which nitrogen halide is least stable thermodynamically?
(A) NF3 (B) NCl3 (C) NBr3 (D) NI3
3. Cyclohexane and water can be separated by using a
separatory funnel. Which property contributes to this
separation?
(A) Cyclohexane and water are immiscible.
(B) Cyclohexane has a lower viscosity than water.
(C) Cyclohex

我猜一下。这个题是national level的吧,我带regional的时候没这么男啊。其实,所
有问题你都可以google到。
1. Which reagents produce a gas when combined?
I. HCl and Na2SO3--->SO2
II. NaOH and Al---->H2
(C) Both I and II
2. Which nitrogen halide is least stable thermodynamically?
(D) NI3 My guess
3. Cyclohexane and water can be separated by using a
separatory funnel. Which property contributes to this
separation?
(A) Cyclohexane and water are immiscible.
4. Which species is diamagnetic?
(A) NO (B) N2+ (C) O2 (D) O22–
这个得画一下,我没空了,踢球去了,但

The clarity of high-concentration polymer solutions (e.g., > 10 wt.%
polymer) can distinguish between block copolymer structures and incompatible
polymer blends. Since block copolymers constitute a single chemical species,
they produce clear single-phase solutions. On the other hand, incompatible
homopolymer blends result in cloudy solutions that eventually separate into
two liquid layers due to well-known thermodynamic immiscibility phenomena.

don't over-interpret this phenomenon. Thermodynamically immiscible polymer
blends or solutions can definitely exhibit phase in micron size. One Tg in DSC
does not necessarily indicate miscibility.
Even for miscible mixtures, they are still not uniform at nm scale. Tim Lodge
and coworkers proposed a self-concentration effect in 2003, which basically
suggests that in nano-domain around a polymer A segment, [A] is always larger
than the average bulk value simply due to chain-connectivity effect. On
