周六一早我们先到了附近一家Hyundai dealer,到了才发现这家原来是卖法拉利的，后
来兼卖Hyundai。看了在parking lot上的Sonata，不难看，不过也不太impressive。招
呼我们的Saleman很nice，毫不pushy（可能以前招呼rich客户养成的习惯）, 先带我们
试了4缸车，又试了6缸车，丝毫也没提finance, trade-in之类的事。感觉4缸车还是比
6缸noisy不少。两个操控性都不错，动力也都没啥问题（highway上车很多，所以加速
测的不充分）。LP一直坐在后座, 说感觉一般(还没有比较,所以没有具体意见).
马上赶到一个Aura dealership. 首先是外形very impressive, 然后试开XE. 真是安静
! 不过brake很费劲, 方向盘感觉比较大, 我们都是小身材, 觉得控制起来不是很舒服.
开了一小段山路, 动力强劲. LP开的时候我在后座,觉得车顶太低. Saleman太pushy,
连Trunk都没给我们show就上路开了,一边开就问要不要finance,有没有trade-in之类, |

S550 is a decent car. The car is fun to drive and silky smooth most of the
time. It's got 380HPs with a powerful 8-cylinder engine, enough for family
uses and will impress many mms if backbone is a young man. On second thought
, maybe a SL550 is more impressive :)

dfbb。后面bumper被我的车轮撞了一个很深的印子。当时对dfbb的吸能设计很

1）Q5 开的是2.0T；不知是不是小发动机(高频振动），加上软悬挂，开起来有点晕感.
大天窗很好，配置一般，not impressed;发动机很给力。
2）Murano (SV); 三万出头的价位，内饰还真有惊艳的感觉；同Q5，觉得悬挂软，开着
晕，飘过。
3）MDX；各方面很不错，发动机很给力；第三排座椅是鸡肋（买主最好当它没有）；车
比较大（140 cubic feet），比其他大40% at least.老婆觉得大了。（precision
acura,dealer 叫Ahmed,个老印，态度巨恶）
4）FX35；车外形很fancy(very impressive，像是mafia老大开的).因为外形设计，后
备箱比同体积车要小些。除此之外，真没的说。一流的内饰（eye catching,惊艳），
一流的动力（感觉比大一号的MDX还有劲）；开起来那个稳--像开坦克一般。老婆不喜
欢，因为太沉的感觉 :)
5）X3：大天窗；内饰一般；动力一般；比较喜欢外形；

days. average mileage 22 mile/gal. much better than my 19mile/gal X5d on
the similar commute routes. It is a little bit underpower if you like to

下午去dealer试了s2000和brz
s2000是08的，这么新的价格还可以（23k）
去一看，颜色是灰色的，果然是最难看的颜色，而且外观保养的很一般，阳光很好也不
shiny，我见过02年的都比这个外观impressive
内部感觉：
各种控件虽然简单但是很driver orientaed，simple but direct。该有的都有，材质
用料算是中高端的。
座椅感觉不错，包裹的很好，但是背部总是调节不到最好，不知道是不是由于没仔细微调
方向盘好像不能上下移动？ （没研究仔细）
由于座位低，窗户又高，感觉空间比miata还要局促。
插进钥匙扭动再start的button设计有点。。。 audio console原厂的实在是太原始了
，不换掉的话应该100%时间用那个盖子掩饰起来

开说其他三个的research school（还有两个我还没去）。作风非常相似，我就统一说
了：
job talk:我只做了research talk，没有做teaching的。所以，不知道给个lecture是
怎么样的。
我感觉，job talk绝对是重要的不能再重要的一个部分，决定着你能否impress other
people.我的talk完，onsite的每个学校无论是dean还是chair of search committee还
是别的faculty，都跟我说,your talk is excellent, outstanding, so impressed。
。。反正就是那些话啦。
几个重要点：
1.我经常看ted.com。虽然有人说那个是骗外行人的。但是，我觉得，来听talk的不可
能都跟你做相关research。做到外行人都懂得你做什么，内行人还觉得你说的很中肯，

I think you should definitely go to the second school. In academia you
should get yourself as much accessibility as possible. You might impress the
people there, so that they might later recognize you when they are in grant
committee/conference committee or as referees. You never know.
It takes you 3 days but they worth it. Unless you think you will leave them
bad impression, which is unlikely to happen since you got the dream job --
you must be really strong.

我在二月底到中西部一所大学onsite。面试持续两天。到的那天晚上由department
chair,committee chair，及两个年轻faculty陪同吃晚饭，Committee chair告诉我是
最后一个面试的。可能由于之前问过Committee chair薪水是否是soft money,
Committee chair不停问我是否有很多面试。不得已只好告诉他们我只有这一个面试并
告知现在有一个industry job offer。然后强调这个是我位置会是我top choice。心情
略为沮丧。
第二天全天的安排是同系里不同faculty谈，较为放松。主要是要表现的humble一些，
积极讨论。晚上晚餐时，吸取去年面试教训，没有点茶（直接导致晚上只睡了2个小时
）。同其他senior faculty一起喝葡萄酒。
第三天要同时给department talk(中午）和proposal talk（下午）。比较特别的安排
。直接结果是proposal talk后，大脑一片空白。Committee chair问我有什么问题时，

but still, don't give up on your R01. don't expect to get it for your first
submission, but keep improving it, if needed, change the story or angle. if
you hit a barrier in one study section, consider submitting to another one
with overlapping emphasis.
as you are aware, the key is to have strong preliminary data. an impressive
list of publications relevant to the proposed work add a lot to your chance

link? I am under the impression that farm raised salmons are kind of "dirty"
. Also I am under the impression that only sashimi grade salmon is ok raw,
but not sure what exactly "sashimi grade" means technically. |

以飨后人，攒攒RP。
背景：国内二流学校CS本科硕士，美国二流学校CS硕士（博士quit)，普通公司工作两
年，C/C++/Fortran，女。
目标：硅谷（家庭团聚）IT工作，90-95K Base。
原本计划要好好看些书，复习Algo和Data structure，但是LG认为时不我待，应该直接
从解题入手，所以第一周复习Programming Interview Exposed（两年前找工时学过一
遍），第二周开始看Careercup.com的Algo/DS题，失败率极高。打印下来每天做题，如
此到2月底。
3月初在LG强烈要求下完成对resume的第一版修改，发给他，修改到第五版，再发给他
在硅谷的若干同学朋友修改，直到第九版，3月中旬经多位朋友之手，推荐到M,G,F,Y,J
和以前工作过的一家公司。因为胆子小，所以简历字字属实没有夸张，只是尽可能地列
出一些可能impressive的数字和例子，众人看法不同，多数认为impressive，少数认为
太modest。

他第二天发了这样一份email:

请问，他的positive impression表达出来的意向强不？得到OFFER的可能性大不？他是

2. Ask questions to make everything clear - often questions are stupid; they
expect you to ask for clarifications
3. Think and discuss all the test cases first << this impresses
4. Think and discuss all the possible solutions
5. choose the best solution - for all test cases discussed
6. implement the solution in code
7. insert exception handling to finally impress |
