As you set out for Ithaka, hope your road is a long one.
by Cavafy

Constantine P. Cavafy
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find the things like that on your way
as long as you keep thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you. |

Ithaka, if there had been no faithful Penelope waiting,
would you still return, Odysseus?
Ithaka, there is none else waiting in your house but
the suitors going after Penelope.
Are you afraid Odysseus?
Kalypso asked you, Odysseys, what is Penelope like,
what is it that made the glory of Kalypso herself
useless, that you would trade immortality with
mortal reunion with Penelope?
Kirke's charm, Skylla's terror and even the beauty
of Nausika, the fairest woman of all claccical times,
did not move |

3714 | 6 Mathematics is not an easy road, and supposedly a long one. I know
that I might not be good at it eventually, since I'm always so
doubtful about myself, and that I am impatient in general.
But there's something very touching in mathematics, like everything else
that is involved with metaphysical thinking. It's more like mathematics
is an exclusive world, such that you can take a different look at
certain things only after you are allowed to enter into it.

For thou knowest what sort of a spirit there is in
a woman's breast; she is fain to increase the house of
the man who weds her, but of her former children and
of the lord of her youth she takes no thought,
when once he is dead, and asks no longer
concerning them. Nay, go, and thyself put all thy possessions
in the charge of whatsoever one of the handmaids
seems to thee the best, until the gods shall show thee a noble bride.
It depends on who are the gods. :-)
