Herbert Passin, a distinguished scholar of Japan, who was
chairman of Columbia University's sociology department and
taught at its East Asian Institute, died on Feb. 26 in New
York. He was 86.
The cause of death was heart disease, according to his
stepson, Scott Latham.
Professor Passin was also a consultant on United
States-Japanese issues to two Japanese prime ministers,
Yasuhiro Nakasone and Noboru Takeshita, as well as |

If you know anything of Chinese history every nation in the world invaded
them at one time or another even Japan dominated them till USA stepped in.
In world war two they were desperate enough to take USA side. Chinese people
