基督教便开展宣教时期。摩门教是在这一宣教时期所 产生。这一段时期有个特色是：
别异神学纷纷产生，摩门教是其中一 个别异神学。
摩门教创始人Joseph Smith(1805-1844)生在美国一个贫苦的家庭，受的教育不高，因
要随其父亲去淘金。
据称1823年9月Joseph Smith在美国纽约的住处看见异象，他被圣父圣子 膏为『真正基
督教先知』。后来又遇见Moromni的天使，这个天使给他一 本金页的书，就是摩门经，
用神秘文字写成。1827年天使赐下神秘眼镜 ，称为乌陵土明，方翻译此书成功。1830
年他创立第一所摩门教会，当 时会员有六人。1833年他出版一本『诫命书』，1835年
出版『教义和诸 约』。提倡一夫多妻制。
1844年6月27日Joseph Smith与其弟 Hallin Smith在监狱后审时，被一 群愤怒的民众
，冲入监狱，将二人枪杀。据说是因为二人荒淫无度、 淫人妻女，早就常常进出法庭
。

摩门教认为“圣经正典仍然未完整; 很多字句, 很多教训仍须加上; 那比以前所记录更

, 摩门教除了宣称神启示了另外三本摩门教的经典, 还强调个人直接从神得到“启示”

基督徒信耶稣都是有理由的。
你可以看到希伯来书里举的例子。没有任何一个例子教人忙信的。Abel和Cain是Adam的
儿子，他们信神算盲信么？他们的老爸之前跟神在一起。说话还是有可信度的吧。
Enoch跟神一起走路，这样信神不能算盲信吧。
神跟Noah对话。而且那会他那时候离亚当没有很多代。这个信不能算盲信吧。
亚伯拉罕也是跟神有很多对话，即使开始那次比较突兀，不过他也听到神对他说话了。
但那会他也不是总听神的话，信心比较弱。但是到了后来，神跟他交往多了后，比如
Sodom和自己老来得子后，亚伯拉罕的信心就很大了。可见亚伯拉罕的信不是盲信。
Sarah跟亚伯拉罕在一起过了这么多年，对神的作为也知道了这么多，当然也和亚伯拉
罕一样不是盲信。
虽然神对他们的应许比如亚伯拉罕的应许还没实现，但是神的很多话已经在他们有生之
年实现了，所以他们才对神有那么大的信心。他们的信心不是平白无故的盲信。

【内 容提要】“唱盛中国”是近年来西方学术界重新评估中国落后问题的一股新潮流
，与西方新闻界、政治学界和史学界长期以来“唱衰中国”形成对照。近年来西方汉
学界有一种倾向，即为已成定论、童叟皆知的“中国落后论”翻案。此派西方学者试图
从社会经济、科学技术、外交礼仪、人文意识、行政管理等角度，全面修正中 国落后
论。这种愿望显然与近年来中国的兴旺崛起有直接关系。由于中国近年来飞速而稳定的
发展超出了包括许多“中国通”在内绝大部分人的预期和想象，于是一个重大问题提了
出来，即中国的重新崛起以其广度和强度来看，不可能是偶然的，而必定有其长远而深

华罗庚与陈省身在二十世纪三四十年代中国数学发展的一个活跃时期，开始崭露头角，
并做出了世界水平的工作。新中国成立前后，他们在时局变迁的背景下分别做出了回国
与去国的不同抉择。1948年12月，时任中央研究院数学研究所代理所长的陈省身举家赴
美。1950年3月，华罗庚由美回国，不久被任命为中国科学院数学研究所所长。
徐利治在西南联合大学（以下简称“西南联大”）求学时，华罗庚与陈省身已是西
南联大闻名遐迩的年轻教授。他们对徐利治都十分赏识。徐利治1945年在西南联大毕业
后，华罗庚推荐他留清华大学数学系任他的助教。徐利治1949年赴英留学，陈省身是他

最近我与我的朋友Steve Nadis写了一本关于哈佛大学数学系历史的书， 由哈佛大学出
版社出版。
这个写作计划开始时，我还是哈佛数学系主任。我对于这个系伟大先驱者的人生颇感好
奇。因为其中有些人藉着他个人的研究甚或透过他们的学生，改变了整个世界数学发展
的路径。
如果其他地方的人，能懂得欣赏这些数学家如何做研究，如何建立起这个优秀的学系，
而且在这段过程裡，还协助建立了哈佛大学的地位，我认为这会是很棒的事。更何况，
这些伟大哈佛数学家的个人轶事，读来也饶有兴味。
我喜欢阅读数学史，认为好数学家需要知道数学的重要概念如何演进。这些概念的演进
充满了生命力，就像从初生婴儿慢慢长大成人的过 程，这段路可能很戏剧化，而且充
满了兴奋与刺激。一旦我们了解数学发展的根源，就更能理解当今数学的发展。我相信
，哈佛数学系从 一个三流学系成长为世界级领导中心的过程， 提供了很值得参考的个
案，或许可以协助许多想建立世界级数学系的大学做为借鑑。我非常感谢我的合着者
