首先，关于僧人不能吃肉，这样根深蒂固的观念，其实是错误的。佛教的教义里面，的
确是禁止杀生，但是，没有严格禁止吃肉。佛教禁止吃荤，但是这个荤指的不是现在我
们所说荤素的荤，而是指味道浓烈的蔬菜。“荤乃蔬菜之臭者”。大蒜、葱、慈葱、兰
葱、兴渠是五辛，荤就是这五辛。所以佛教禁饮酒，
早期的僧侣过着依靠施主布施的生活，俭朴是第一要素，后代金碧辉煌的法袍袈裟
的原型是僧人把施主布施的碎布拼结而成的“百纳衣”食物则随施主布施而食用，不得
挑拣，佛法虽然禁止杀生，但是只要符合三净肉（1）不为我杀，（2）不见杀，（3）
不听到杀的标准就可以食用，说到底是为了避免给施主添麻烦啊，早期佛教的质朴和体
贴人情，是非常让人感动的。
僧人不能吃肉，确切说这是中国汉族僧侣从南北朝时期梁武帝传下的规矩。
梁武帝是中国南北朝时期有影响的笃信佛教的帝王，他对佛教的发展同样有巨大的
