perfect. However, you can still be successful in a good lab even thought the
boss is not that famous (HHMI or academy member). The most important thing of
selecting postdoc lab is that you can do whatever you like (in the same
direction of the lab, of course) and you have enough money to carry out your

他们组做research.通常National Lab是很缺学生的(或者说PHD student比postdoc成本
上便宜很多[postdoc工资就要60K左右,学生他们只要付20k,且不提福利的差别]),如果
联系好了,你可以抛弃现在老板(有现在老板支持的话更好,national lab会帮你出RA的
钱),直接在national lab里做PHD thesis应该更好,有这个机会的
学生一般都可以毕业后在national lab里拿到postdoc的位置. |

盯的可紧了，自己身体力行的周六日也在干活，学生也不敢偷懒
一周能工作80个小时
好处就是中等的学生也能被push毕业
我的学生可能一般，但是一年的productivity吓死同事
老外基本上很少特别的推学生/下属
你愿意进lab很好，你自己push自己，做得很好就能找到后续的更高的位置
做的不好就果断请人走路
有少数混日子的，但是核心团队还是很强的
最后的结果，老中lab出来的都能找到工作，但是没有太耀眼的学生
老外lab一堆学生毕不了业中间走路，但是隔几年总能出个明星学生 |

一个是香港某大学的AP；
一个是某不错research lab的researcher。
工资税后应该是差不多（考虑到香港的税低）。
香港的学校本专业学术水平还是挺不错的，给的start up package也还不错。地点在香
港优点是离父母近便于照顾，饮食习惯更接近，社会地位相对较高，以后有望和国内/
香港合作做一些有用的产品，缺点是住房拥挤、气候湿润、语言不通、子女教育不便。
Research lab本方向有本领域的大牛，如果去Research lab以后可以和大牛一起有合作并学习很多东西，如果拼几年，希望能够做出本领域比较牛的东西，有机会到北美tier 1 or tier 2的学校faculty。当然也有可能研究上默默无闻，甚至最坏的情况是被几年后被裁掉。
对比：Research lab相对更不稳定，流动性更强，但是更容易激发人的竞争力，以后似乎更有望到北美top tier学校faculty（求证？）。香港AP更稳定，薪水在香港也算比较decent
，几年后争取混到full prof，应该是海归的最好选择之一。

, group activity (publication) of your future postdoc advisor will be the
most important factors to be considered. I know quite a few persons go to
academia after postdoc in national lab or company research lab.
The good thing of national lab is the pay is quite decent.

里的管理层很深，政治斗争是学校比不了的。
但是national lab的工资较学校高，不用教书，如果稳定了可以养老。不过也看具体的
title。很多DOE的lab有facility scientist 和lab scientist的区别 （不同实验室具
体名称可能略有不同），前者工资来自hard money,但要花更多时间提供user service
(>50% effort)；后者工资更多来自soft money，funding压力也不小。认识不少成功的
后者，都有附近大学大牛的支持，没有这层关系想独立很难。
如果未来希望自己独立，还是学校更好。
当然如果你导师是UCBerkeley的大牛，你要能在LBNL找到division scientist的位子，
你还是会很爽。 |

发帖数: 57 | 15 没有就没得用，但是有了的时候，你还可以选择尽量不用、优先考虑合作。如果是类似
做geneBank数据库这样的，完全可以不要；如果涉及biology function研究，就我了解
的圈子来看，Wet lab和bioinformatics都有的通常比只有bioinformatics的做得更顺
利些。
但是每个人背景不一样，不可按自己的背景去评估别人，也不要依据别人的背景来做自
己的决策。如果一路上来都是纯计算机、数学、物理等，可能很难经营好一个wet lab
，不碰也罢。理论研究也有很多方向，不同方向对wet bench的依赖程度不同，完全可
以选择做那些不需要wet bench的方向、充分发挥自己在数理方面的优势。如果有过生
物实验经验、后来一段时间专做bioinformatics，能有一个wet lab应该会是好事，尤
其如果自己数理方面并不是特别强的时候。
Bioinformatics也好，wet bench也罢，都是研究手段或工具，不必硬把两者分得清清
楚楚。其实就算两个都做，也不一定就可以被看作贪心或不够专注，很可能是实验室所

你如果跟医生诊所说,因为他们不收你钱,他们没办法给你免.你跟lab去说,lab说我们不
懂,只是按医生开的化验单做检查.

如果最后你自己不得不付,就去跟lab的billing department讲讲价,一般都会减免不少

scientist 不过也不是所有人都能去名校做教授 所以还是量力而为 对于一般人来说
Lab里面的一个
铁饭碗还是挺好的，比学校轻松很多。
如果考虑回国，如果你是名校的ap 可能比lab的scientist更好吧 不过名校的postdoc
可能就不如

板关系虽然没撕破，但是彼此都不是满意，再说很快就快经费用完了。我现在开始找新
的lab。我的给的CV上面推荐人基本给的都是做博士的老板，教授。现在的老板大嘴巴
，去开会碰到认识我的教授什么还唧唧歪歪说我的不好，所以我不想给。
但是最近有个教授看了我的CV联系我，问我能否给现在工作地方教授的联系方式，我一
时冲动就给了。但是有点后悔，就和一个美国教授说这事情。他说，"你可以直接写信
告诉诚恳告诉他说和现在supervisor处得不是很融洽，不是最合适的推荐人。但是我相
信我如果加入你的lab会取得成功的。也就是说婉拒。他说在美国导师和学生，postdoc
处得不好的多了去了。诚实点婉拒，比给他你supervisor的联系方式，让别人说坏话好
。但是关键我已经给他联系方式，估计这个lab是黄了。

每天早上拿个塑料袋去lab，里面装着塑料饭盒，饭盒里是昨晚家里吃剩的饭菜。中午
用微波炉热了，再来一杯廉价的袋泡茶或者一杯热水，单位地茶和热水不要钱，咖啡和
饮料要花钱去买，这个太奢侈了。喜欢喝饮料可以等着Walmart降价时候买，一箱减价
两块钱，算下来比单位里卖的便宜不少。

The good and bad of working in diagnostic lab has been said by other people.
Basically, the work is very stable, but you most likely will have to take
another year's course in a community college or somewhere because most
schools in China are not accredited by the American's boards for med tech.
Also, another potential problem is most of those job positions don't sponsor
H-1B

发帖数: 2629 | 41 想当年选择生物专业的时候也是有志青年一个，对做实验挺感兴趣的。
后来读phd的时候，老板的lab太干涸，上十年没grant没idea，他人也没什么
inspiration，就我自己胡折腾，在绝望中，我失去了对科研的兴趣，开始着急工作啊
身份啊前途之类的，而自己在lab里独自打斗确实是有力无心。
现在的lab也不算是个大lab，但是老板很有积极性，很喜欢push我读东西，他们看到什
么有用的paper也会给我一份，提醒我去多读读其他的，做实验方面虽然老板不亲自指
导，技术知道的也不多，但我觉得这就够了。
自己慢慢做着做着，就会有点感觉了，有点发现的时候，还是很exciting的。
真正的科学家是脑子里24小时都想着实验，想着idea的，这是真的，我们老板就是这样
的，永远都想着科研。
我虽然做不到废寝忘食的地步，但是等我自己沉浸进去的时候，也是吃饭睡觉的时候都
会想着今天的结果和以后的ideas等等。 |

Very complicated.
Unlike the medical degree which only has a major board, the field of
clinical lab has three major boards in USA.
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc
American Medical Technologists
Several other smaller boards also exist in USA.
You need to:

Please help me to choose from the two offers. Both titile and salary are
higher in PhD's lab and will work on things I am more familiar with. I
wonder if working in an MD's lab will help me later or not. Big thanks! |

connections, or makes it easier to ask for an observership later, I would go
for less money. I know there are several MDs in that MD's lab. The Phd's
lab is for money only then.

第一，我不年轻
第二，training program是clinical pathology lab提供的，说明了接受有phd学位的
人申请，两年的training，之后考certificate，然后自己找位置。我也看到很多
clinical lab 的director是phd出身。
第三，做一个clinical lab director也不是什么特别特别好的职位，混口饭吃而已，
临床实验室的工作都是为医生服务，lab director的收入相对医生来说算不高的吧，不
然这些位置也不会去招phd出身的人，谈不上在医疗领域一步登天
第四，我有我自己的经历和优点，不试过怎么知道我肯定不行呢，我只是想多收集信息
，希望自己能做一个比较客观的职业规划，再着手自己认为值得的事情
不过，还是要谢谢你提供的信息，位置比较少，但也不是没有 |

First of all, there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution in finding a
postdoc lab. Which lab you can join depends mostly on who you are. There
are “high flyers” – Ph.D.s with first-author CNS papers and strong
