12分在纽约家中安详离世。“他还希望为国家建设一个科研机构，像世界著名的库朗数
学研究所那样，提起中国他又几度落泪……”
今天，院网首页已变为黑白，师生点烛追思。这位年仅50多岁的海归 “千人计划
”特聘专家，最近两年在美治病，与病魔抗争到底；而之前多年，蔡申瓯作为最年轻的
国家千人教授，在上海交大担任自然科学研究院院长和致远学院教指委副主任。
院里的学生们可能并不知道，这位海归院长其实在离校不远的地方有别墅，在闵行
校区周边还租了一套三居室。然而，他家人不在上海，平日就“以校为家”，常睡自己
办公室，把所有时间都留给了教研。在上海交大闵行校区，解放日报·上观新闻记者见
到他大约20平方米的办公室，房门上贴着一张纸，上书8个字：“有事请进，无需敲门
”。

亲戚家的小孩在申请学校，目前有两个机会：
一个是Texas A&M University，全奖(TA), Program:PhD in Mathematics.
还有一个是纽约大学读硕士，没有奖学金，要自付学费的New York University:
program: M.S in Mathematics．
本人对数学系不是很了解。请问，ＮＹＵ的数学系值不值得自费读。还有，他本人想读
博士。如果在ＮＹＵ 读完了硕士在申请博士容不容易？ 谢谢！ |

他的儿子正在申请来美国的大学读本科。已经有几个OFFER 了，但是因为不太理解几个
英语单词的含义，所以不知道那几个OFFER是不是他们真正想要学的专业。
他的儿子想学精算专业（actuarial science）。但是可能比较难直接进入精算专业 （
actuarial science），所以他想先进入数学系 （mathematics），然后转入精算专业。
他们的理解是：在美国，、"actuarial science" 与"mathematics"同属数学系。
他们的问题：
1、"major preference: mathematics"指的是数学系还是数学专业？
2、"specialization of actuarial science" 与"BS in actuarial science" 的区别？
