how do you actually measure the house size??
we are looking at a for sale by owner house and the owner measured every
single place of the house, including closets, stairs and hall ways. The sum
space is 1900sf, but just checked county record and found that it was only
1325, huge difference, which one should we trust?

That is exactly the point. My guess is that this makes you better prepared
for longer runs in hot and humid condictions, so you know how much you need
to replenish.
It's understandable that some of us have a great sense of it without
actually measure it (like whx), some others (like me) miss the target by
pure "feeling", and would benefit from a more scientific measurement.
I'd think Alberto Salazar was an extreme case, he was lucky to be alive.

我自己看了看书,我的理解就是关于在测量中仪器对输入的响应。不知道这样理解对吗?
我自己在看Physical Measurement and Analysis(Nathan Cook & Ernest Rabinowicz,
Addison-Wesley Publishing,1963)这本书。
书上介绍说所有的仪器的响应基本上都可以归结为两个微分方程。这个我基本能够看懂。
我的问题是,
1)我如果知道这个仪器的响应,这对我的测量工作用什么用呢?
2)我应该如何根据这个仪器的响应去改进我的测量方法?
3)我应该如何利用这个仪器的响应去分析数据?
但是在书上去没有找到这几个问题的答案。请大虾们给我言简意赅的介绍一下。

I use spin-coater to get a polymer film. Then how can I measure the
thickness of this film? Laser? What if the film is not transparent to
normal laser wavelength?

There are several ways to measure the thickness.
Mass method only works for thickness larger than microns.
Ellispometry is the most popular method measure from 1 micron
down to few nonometers as in the case of SAMs. You have to know
some prior info for this technique, like optical constant
of substrate and film (wavelength dependent), which sometimes
is not easy to get. Some widely-accepted assumptions include:
1) for most thin organic film, n~1.45.

i have several films of 10-100 microns thick and 3 cm^2 big. an accurate
balance can measure their mass, but their volume seems so hard to measure.

From what you said, it sounds like situationally specific measure would be
appropriate. My sense is that you could write your own measure. As long as
it demonstrates reliability and content validity, you should be fine.

Just took a look at Shreve's book. It doesn't seem to be quite obvious to
show the martingale property though.
For ED futures, let F(t; T1, T2) be the time-t future rate (simply
compounded), from T1 to T2.
Let L(t; T1, T2) be the forward Libor rate.
Then we have F(t; T1, T2) is a martingale under risk-neutral measure, so is
the ED futures price of course.
Moreover, F(t; T1, T2) is the expectation of L(t; T1, T2) under risk-neutral

两组subjects, 一组Treatment, 一组placebo. 人数相等,均为8人;
2-phase: intervention phase(week1-week12), 每个病人每周1个measurement;
followup phase (week13-week18),每个病人每周1个measurement;

说说我用过的书:
周民强的 <<实变函数论>>, 本科时候的教材, 很不错.
测度里面最经典的是Halmos 的 Measure Theory, GTM系列, 这本书很严谨, 不过Radon-Nikodym theorem的那一块, 老师说思想有点老, 用讲义代替.
也看过Ash的Probability & Measure Theory, 这本书基本就针对概率讲测度论, 相对通俗易懂, 数学感较差. 不过这本书里面有不少错, 有时让人摸不着头脑.

这个我会!不过只会用SAS做。
以前给人做过一个分析,有个仁兄,有两种药物,一种是treatment of interest,一
种是control,用在老鼠身上看能不能缩小肿瘤体积。也是repeated measures,开始用
药之后肿瘤体积是隔几天测一回的(老鼠为活体,肿瘤在皮下很容易测体积)。这些都
没什么问题,但是这个傻叉为了省钱,每只老鼠身上一左一右他诱发了两个肿瘤!
然后我们又不敢轻易地取这同一只老鼠身上两个肿瘤的体积的平均值来做分析,因为差
得挺多的。当然也不敢assume它们independent。怎么把这两个肿瘤之间的correlation
加到model中可愁死我老板了……
后来弄了一个two dimensional repeated measures model。这两个dimension之间的
covariance matrix就是每个dimension自己的covariance matrix的Kronecker product
,也就是描述同一只老鼠两个肿瘤体积之间关系的covariance matrix,和描述同一只
老鼠肿瘤体积over time之间关系的... 阅读全帖

repeated measures的概念,觉得repeated measures 里面的subject(比如一个学生,

repeated measure多用在LONGITUDINAL DATA里面,你如果以前ANOVA学的很透,随便
找本REPEATED MEASURE的书翻翻就是了 (CHANCES ARE你前面问的那个HLM也在里面)

score bands to measure the deterioration of seperation power. on the other
hand, a parallel shift of the line, or say, a change of intercept should
indicate a overall increase/decrease of quality across all score bands
