刚到加拿大时，我住在大温哥华地区的素里市。与繁华的温哥华相比，这边比较“

个中学，离家3分钟的路，第二天就去报到了。
接待我们的老师挺友好，看我们英语费劲，还找来一个华人学生当翻译。此兄英文

我联系了他们，他们说再过3-4周跟他们联系，他们来带走小猫崽，然后fix猫妈妈和其
他猫。我这几天没怎么敢动那俩小崽子，今天趁猫妈妈不在家，掏出来看了一下，都长
得相当肥，小花脸tabby长的很好，抓出来就喵喵叫。小胖黑右眼给眼屎粘住了，我给
拿湿纸巾擦了一下，好像有不少黄绿色眼屎，不知道是不是脓啊，小胖黑很淡定，拿出
来也不叫不挣扎，背上有花纹了，不是纯黑的。

一九三七年，胡适出任驻美大使，卸任后又在美国各大学讲学，先后共九年，包括
了整个抗日战争时期。这里我要报告我在《日记》中发现了胡适一九三八年夏季的一段
短短的情缘。让我先把材料抄在下面，再逐步解说。
一九三八年四月十四日：
Roberta Lowitz邀吃茶，她谈在Jamaica看英国人的荒谬，我很感兴趣。她去参观
其地之医院，为揭发其种种弊政，颇引起反动。殖民地之政治，至今犹如此，可恨。
四月十六日：
今天Robby来谈，同吃饭，下午始去。
四月二十日： 与Robby同饭，久谈。

得知是1963年的Newbery少儿图书得奖作品，又是科幻小说，就找来和小孩一起看。
这本书读起来非常愉快和舒服。一是行文流畅自如，不滞不涩，不疾不徐，像一个
口齿清晰、表达准确的小学老师娓娓讲故事。二是异想天开的科幻故事吸引人。13岁女
生Meg急躁而勇敢，爱打抱不平。她的科学家爸爸神秘失踪。科学家美女妈妈提到四维
时空之外的第五维tesseract，即a wrinkle in time。通过这个时间的褶子，Meg等小
孩穿越到其他星球，与弥漫在宇宙间的黑暗势力斗智斗勇，救回父亲。三是人物非
常好玩。Meg的弟弟近四岁才开始说话，一开口就是惊人的“exclusive”、“
inadvertently”、“educational”、“The road to hell is paved with good
intentions”这样的高深言论，太逗了！更好玩的是三个神秘、超凡又天真爱笑的老太
太：Mrs Whatsit去偷了人家十几条床单（后来才知道是为了穿越用），Mrs Who出口

She is divorced and does not seem to have any children.
She has not found any new husband, let alone a husband of her age.
