十年前，第一次有了自己的房子，在一个安静的城郊社区。在搬家前一天，我们把一些
小东西放到新居。在去信箱拿信的时候，忽然听到轻轻的“唔”的一声，从信箱小岛的
树丛中窜出一团影子，直蹭我的裤腿。定睛一看，好标致的一只小猫咪。浑身棕色和黄
色相间的花纹，就是我们家乡所谓的“虎狸斑猫”，后来才知道英语叫做tabby。最让

i read it during some personal life crisis many years ago...almost remember
everything in that book...
she has a first novel coming out...the namesake...though the review is not
that crazy for interpreter...i plan to read it, when i have time...i love her
writing...attention to details, and dicisive(?)...
i bought middlesex for a long time without reading it //blush
another recent immigrant novel is "brick lane"...reviews good...

的《The Namesake》就开始滑坡了。Aslam同学第二本小说居然
这么好看，估计是水平也是慢工出细活（写了11年）的结果。
书是以某英国小镇，巴基斯坦为主的移民社区为场景。小镇的正经
英国名没提，南亚移民们给取名叫Dasht-e-Tanhaii (Desert of
Loneliness)。镇名概括了移民们在陌生国度的心态。人们一方面依
赖共生,一方面百般怀疑戒备着英国的白人社会、巴基斯坦的老家和
镇上的的亲朋邻里。人们为着逃离老家的陋俗贫困而飘洋过海，来
后的精神寄托往往还是原来的宗教道德，时不时有人的名声甚至生
命毁在镇上的流言蜚语中。
贯串全书的故事是一起风俗杀人案。案子表面的过程：镇上的一对
情人，在女方没找到前夫宗教离婚之前公开同居。女方的两个哥哥
为家庭的名誉，手刃了两个无耻男女。按说这个背景和情节最常见
于伤痕文学和谴责小说之类。特别是9/11之后的世界大环境和出版
小环境下，这两类书一万本没有，一百本也是有的。
该书特别的就在于没有落入这两个俗套。作者以男死者长兄Shamas

和A temporary matter。因为印象太好--特别是后一篇竟然
很像是有O'Henry的遗风--干脆把整本书买了。我认为虽然
全集的质量平均起来比不上精选的这两篇，给个普利策还
是应该的。
The Namesake也在New Yorker上有个节选，小果戈理名
字由来那节，当短篇小说看也是不错。可是抻成长篇，就
像把个蚂蚁放大一百倍，原来挺好的结构开始支撑不了了
。。。 |

在美国生了一对儿女。后面故事围绕他儿子来讲述。
非常感人的一个片子，我觉得在片子里能看到我们自己的影子，如果你是第一代从移民
的话。非常的真实，人的一生好像也就那样。非常值得一看呀~~强烈推荐。

，Jhumpa Lahiri，印度人，也是女性。
Lahiri的成就和名气都比李翊云要大。她第一本书Interpreter of Maladies也得了李
翊云靠《千年祈愿》得的PEN/Hemingway Award，不过Lahiri后来又靠这本书得了普利
策奖。这样就更牛一些。而且她的第一部长篇The Namesake被好莱坞拍成了电影，是全
国发行，比王颖拍的独立制片的《千年祈愿》影响要大得多。
Lahiri的成名作Interpreter of Maladies我也看过，也很黑暗。有的故事看了之后心
里会很堵。她08年新出的书我没看过，据说更dark。Lahiri的作品题材大多都是在美国

大部分文学奖的评委，文学杂志的编辑，报纸上写书评的专栏作家们，当他们看到李翊

microstructure也是剑术不小。今天晚上上课，在讲2000年Monte Carlo method
approach在连续时间定价美式期权的进展，又提道一次Longstaff的名字。太个崇拜了

quant and PMs are not mutually exclusive. many quants as in the namesake
novel "The Quants" are PMs as well. Peter Muller, Cliff Asness, Simons,
Overdeck, (just to name a few), all proudly identify themselves as quants,
but I would think they are PMs as well.
当然大牛可以说 PMs 和supporting quants 没有什么交集。但是quantitative PM
和 fundamental-style PM 一样，都是投资风格而已，个人觉得并不是说变成 senior
