记得在“一些人”还没有“先富起来”的年代，分币还是很值钱的。青菜3分一斤，带鱼1毛7分一斤，大饼3分、油条4分，食堂一客大排骨1毛8分。看电影1毛5分，雪糕8分，乘电车4分、7分……那时若有“非诚勿扰”，“约会基金”赞助1块钱就够了。
曾经有首儿童歌曲：“我在马路边，捡到一分钱，把它交到警察叔叔手里边”。那时候，分币还很有用，一分钱可以买糖吃。但是现在，假若有小朋友拿一分钱去做“拾金不昧”好人好事，警察叔叔不会“把头点”，而是把头摇：“脑子坏掉了”。
“零头”貌似不是钱，马路边上丢落的分币，不会有人俯身去捡。
美国似乎尚未“与时俱进”。路上偶见分币，仍会有人捡起。美国的分币都是硬币，分四种：1分(Cent)，5分(Nickel)，10分(Dime)，和25分(Quarter)。1分的，用处不大。但碰巧超市促销，1分钱可买1盒鸡蛋。来美国探亲的老太太，一个1分硬币换12只鸡蛋，绕一圈，换个收银台，再来一盒。
