I've been using ibus+ziranma for over a decade, the only annoying part is
that I can no longer install it by apt-get since 12.04, but the package can
still be found and installed by dpkg.
if you like googlepinyin, both ibus and fcitx have the related packages.
just "apt-cache search googlepinyin"
try the OneTab extension, it cures the memory pain of Chrome like a magic

for light use, it is fine.
my only windows machine is a dell dimension with 4G memory. I use it
remotely (via remote desktop) for running widows specific programs, such as
office, and building windows binaries. I always have a thunderbird running
for my emails, some times open a few Word windows and a couple of chrome
tabs. it has two ssd drives, so file IO speed is acceptable.
if you want to open many tabs, you need to install the OneTab extension to
help you free memory

if you have less than 16G memory, you still have the risk of exhausting your
memory if many chrome tabs are opened and left overnight. This happens
quite often for one of my laptops with 8G memory. I have to use OneTab
plugin to free up memory from time to time. |
