1906年4月23號，《奧克蘭詢問者郵報》發表一篇文章，標題大剌剌地寫著：「我們的
城裡不要再有中國城（Let Us Have No More Chinatowns in Our Cities）」。加州在
1869年大地震後，在1875年前後修改州憲章，要求每個城市剔除華裔人口。當年的華人
即便在1855至1870年間，為加州貢獻了約5,500萬稅金（佔30-50％加州總預算），但是
非但不能擁地，無法成為公民或與非華裔結婚，也不能在法庭上提供辯詞。
中華文化基金會的教育及參與總監歐偉明（Darin Ow-Wing）說，自己父親出生於1922
年。那一年，《舊金山評論報》出了一篇文章，挑明：「全美現在只剩28,000名中國人

for short term. Englewood is closer to my work place,and it seems a little
bit cheaper from craigslist, but I heard Fort Lee is safer.
