这纯属意外。
本来读完虎妻，还想继续读点稍微不那么费脑子的小部头，继续缓一缓，在虎妻和盲刺
客之前买的 Ian McEwan 的 Solar 都已经摆在床头了，从网上看打分也不是那么高，
作家我很欣赏，二百多不到三百页的样子。
结果这周回来同事借给我本书，接过来一看，傻了，遭遇Roth。之前逛各种wiki，各种
单子，晓得Roth算是在世美国作家里，“四大金刚”之一，晓得American Pastoral是
他的代表作，纽时评过去25年百佳美国小说排第四，晓得绕不过去，迟早都会读。但绝
对没打算今年，至少现在读，本来寻思着读读莫里森的书，应应景，因为她今年有新书
出来。
同事告诉我，这本书读不下去了（88页），让我先读，读完给她大概讲讲。我暗自叫苦
，这姐们儿是native speaker，reader，读的小说没有一千也有八百了，她习惯同时读
5-6本书，不同时间，不同状态，不同体裁，从小说到非小说，从严肃到消遣，前段时
间刚读完了本一千多页的俄国小说，还说什么特别喜欢尤利西斯，每过几年就拿出来看
一遍。

说纷纭，至少在The Crying of Lot 49里面，Thomas Pynchon告诉我们，人生的意义，
就在似有似无处。
小说不长，我读的这个版本，152页，几天就翻完了。和我之前读过的全不一样，有点
荒谬，有点空旷，有点讽刺，黑色幽默，看似漫不经心又有点步步惊心，这书的写作风
格和结构本身就很好的诠释了作者想要通过故事表达的想法：我们真的需要一个阴谋来
解释生活中的悲剧么？
难怪这书出来后被摇滚圈奉为经典，作者本人也是资深摇滚乐迷。
情节懒得介绍了，想看的自己看吧，很短，很幽默，不耽误你时间，也绝对不会让你失
望。在我试读American Pastoral失败之后，适时地挽救了我刚刚有点苗头的阅读兴趣
，连LD都注意到，“你过完年以后怎么读书慢了？”
至于语言，网上有人说拗口，难读，长句等，我自己一上来读的时候，真的就还好，可
能Saramago看了两本，都是长达半页甚至一页的长句，免疫了。至于难读，我觉得难读

应该被灭。我都不敢相信一个信教的人，一个传教的人，一个pastor会当着那么多信徒
的面鼓吹这样毛骨悚然的东西！而下面的人听得津津有味，间或还来个"Amen"！
我们刚去那个教堂的时候，他请我们去他家吃饭，就是非常简单的烤鸡腿，我们觉得很
正常，可是他非要显示他很和我们的不同，说他冰箱里有熊肉啥啥的，还告诉我们他楼
下储藏着很多粮食。他老婆就很不满地叫了他名字，阻止他继续胡言乱语。这不是脑子
进水还是什么？后来我们请他们到我们家吃饭，非常丰盛，那个蠢驴就一句废话也没了
。后来看他实在恶心，就再也不去了。
周围认识的基督徒不少，好的见过，坏的不少，比不信教的人，好/坏比例没有什么区
