you can turn on the performance monitoring registers.
And one of the monitoring code is for number of
floating instructions executed. |

computer lab machines are all sparcs, now you see all those PII, PIII
Wintel machines donated by Intel and/or Microsoft instead.
Linux is extremely popular in academia, the growing trend is
school admins start installing nt/linux dual boots in labs :P
Supercomputing facilities are still being dominated by AIX though,
the growing trend is they are being replaced by linux or NT clusters. |

than CISC cpu for same clock speed. But I feel it is wrong.
I am using UltraSparc 10 (cpu is: UltraSPARC-IIi, 333 MHz),
I wrote alot of Fortran programs, all shows it's speed is
about 2/3 of a Intel PIII 500 cpu. (reason is Intel/AMD add
parallel in there CISC cpu?)
So, conclusion is, for same clock speed RISC and CISC cpu
does not have great difference (except price, hehe)

its cpu is somthing thing like pIII 500, mainly used for embedded computing,
what do you expect for at $900?
And I don't think cs professors like sun, it is just a tradition. More and
more are switching to wintel. |

it's even slower than my PIII 450 desktop with exactly the same RAM

我觉得这东西很有前途。这有两层意思。
第一，在我目前的机器上（piii 667, 512m, nvidia32) 运行效果不好，会跳帧。
第二，如果你又一个非常"powerful" (dual cpu or a P4 with a good video card) 的
机器，其效果会很好。加上几乎是 one click 的操作。可以想见以后备份dvd 将不太难
。
优点:
1. 操作简单，一步到位。（转 camcorder 的文件应该很合适。我是过 win encoder 7.)
2. 图像效果不错。
3. 我转的5分钟dvd 没有 out of sync 的问题。
4. 压缩比合适。（dvd 720*480 to 360*240 500 kbps, 约1:6)
5. 界面好。有 support. free! (up to now。）
问题：
1. 不能用 window media codecs 和 iso mpeg 4 之外的 codec.
2. 编辑工具还不多。
3. 需要 very p |

结论：没有明显区别

Win XP Pro Win Server 2003

但是用得很少所以还很新,
淘汰了太可惜, 买了也买不起价钱. 我自己平时
出去的时候也需要.
现在有需要可能要写点C++的小程序,不会很复杂,
这个笔记本如果装vs.net 2003或者vs.net 2005
的话是不是会很慢? 最好装什么(linux除外)?
cygwin和xemacs可以吗? 还有cywin是不是已经包括
了gcc和g++ compiler了?

I press ctrl-alt-delete and find system idle process
take 98%, and a process call java.exe. I stop it,and the maple window
