reality, the better people we become. I have been putting my best efforts
to balance my likewise "visionary science" vs. harsh reality of perverse
academic incentives. Here's my solution in a long run, if it would ever work.
1. "manufacture" a good "story" as best I can. Have a happy ending with my
pragmatic big-name mentor. Maximize my chances of landing a faculty position.

Jazzcat once made a point here that practicing cases is THE most important
thing for getting a job in consulting, not a MBA degree. And practicing
cases is pragmatic for Chinese applicants.
I also found out that besides cases, whether you are a really fun guy/gal to
work with, as viewed by your American colleagues, is probably equally
important. But that seems much harder for us. |

better than PHD with the same pay.
I don't think I said anything about diploma. while I was talking about the
pHD training. A trained PHD should be much more pragmatic than a BS w/out
bench working trained, especially for a chemist and chem tech position.
well, if you want to talk about the POSTdoc level work, I don't think a BS
fresh graduate could handle with less than three month hands on hands

换句话说，不是方法论的问题，你为什么说“快速见效”
会走到尽头？假设找到“有效成分”，为什么不在“副作用可控”
的前提下尽快治病减少损失？
至于生物学，我从来没质疑过它要发展，爱研究什么原理研究什么原理，
有些很pragmatic的东西我就不说了，伤和气，呵呵。我只说，现象性
研究在目前人类知识水平下 应该 成为医学的主导，当然利益链会导致
现实往相反方向走，这不是局外人所关心的。:) |

很简单，即使找到治疗方案，很多慢性系统性疾病也不能快速恢复啊。
比如心血管疾病。
你尽管说，呵呵，其实和我无关。当然很pragmatic的自然有它的现实意义所在。
大药厂里R&D需要生物类的人才是很合理的事。我还真没看出来有什么可以
谴责的。
你可能很狭隘的理解“机理”了。 机理分各个层次，分子水平上的，
细胞水平上， 组织器官水平上的。 我看你似乎是指分子水平上的。
很多疾病了解到细胞水平就可以找到治疗方法了。当然，也有一些可以

看看它被怎么基础科学研究主导的规则所限制的。
问题就在于这个“有效”和“安全”如何定义。什么叫“有效成分”？
什么叫“副作用”？:) 都要按照还原论的病因分类来吧，不是按照
人类的身体状态来吧。偏生这个治愈还是说的人的身体状态恢复正常，
荒谬不？错位不？:)
为啥说FDA，为啥说不能一种药治一种病。而是一种药，调节一种状态？
当然原因很pragmatic，这不是科学能解决的问题。

一切是首先要解决的问题。
现在问题不就是大家抢资源吗？我一工程师为啥都要扯医学
和生物研究的问题呢？不是烧了太多钱，看着徒手挖山浪费心疼，
而且抢了我们的收入，谁爱搭理。
医学走到今天这个窘境，原因极其pragmatic，和科学没什么关系。
要解决所有的问题，只要不允许医疗市场定价（人命如何定价？
又不能货比三家，根本不存在市场化的基础）就行了，呵呵。 |

Anyway, unlike some people here, I am actually trying to be helpful. Joking aside, the part about law school is pretty good advice for an English major. A few English major friends of mine have gone that path and they are very happy now. Incidentally, they all married CS guys and stay married. So, what I said is just being realistic rather than being mean. |

standard? Would it be better that people say they are interested in computer
science but the thoughts they are actually hiding is CS is the major most
likely to secure a job with a good enough pay? Hardly to see the difference
between. Our behaviors are always mixed with different interests. Trying to
separate them out would be not pragmatic and cannot justify the long term
efforts. |

likelihood principle and some other principles really make sense. But in
frequentist inference, these principle doesn't hold. Also, Bayesian is not
only MCMC and there are many things in Bayesian statistics. Personally I
like the philosophical foundation of Bayesian statistics. Why don't we learn
from both frequentis and Bayesian. Many famous professors, in my opinion,
