Just as some have speculated that the experience of slavery lingers in the
psyche of the descendants of slaves, the Irish Famine, the result of the
British genocidal policy against the Irish, has affected the generations of
the Irish that followed, and Jews are suffering from post-traumatic stress
as a result of the Holocaust. Dissolving into Whiteness has provided both
with an escape chute. It was when James Baldwin wrote in Dan Watt’s The
Liberator that Jews had become White Christians that h... 阅读全帖

America’s response to mass shootings has long followed a predictable
pattern. We mourn. Offer thoughts and prayers. Speculate about the motives.
And then—even as no developed country endures a homicide rate like ours, a
difference explained largely by pervasive accessibility to guns; even as the
majority of gun owners support commonsense reforms—the political debate
spirals into acrimony and paralysis.
This time, s... 阅读全帖

预测错了不难,难的是长期稳定的预测错误

President Trump has a new chief economic adviser. Larry Kudlow, the CNBC
commentator who served in President Ronald Reagan’s Office of Management
and Budget, will become the director of the National Economic Council, a
position being vacated by Gary D. Cohn, who said he would resign after
losing an internal battle over the president’s plan to impose tariffs on
foreign metals.

Each year I drive across the eastern half of the country twice, including
the states of Ohio and Indiana. Without benefit of signage it would be hard
to tell them apart. Each has an industrial base in the north and a
heartland dedicated largely to agriculture. Each state is 86 percent white
and has a Republican governor. Over the last 25 years, I think I have
stopped at every McDonald's on 1-70 and 1-71, and the service is uniformly
upbeat and amiable along the whole route.

This may be the case. But there is a counter argument to be made here. What
aren’t people talking about right now? They aren’t talking about the facts
of the Trump University lawsuit (polling during the Republican primary
campaign showed that this was Trump supporters’ biggest concern). They also
aren’t talking about Hillary Clinton’s widely praised speech attacking
Trump on foreign policy.

As early as June 2015, FiveThirtyEight argued that Donald Trump "isn't a
real candidate"[84] and maintained that Trump could not win the nomination
until late in the election season.[85] When Donald Trump became the
presumptive Republican nominee in May 2016, New York Times media columnist
Jim Rutenberg wrote that "predictions can have consequences" and criticized
FiveThirtyEight for underestimating Trump's chances. He argued that by
giving "Mr. Trump a 2 percent chance at the nomi... 阅读全帖

Confirmation Bias
The Misconception: Your opinions are the result of years of rational,
objective analysis.
The Truth: Your opinions are the result of years of paying attention to
information which confirmed what you believed while ignoring information
which challenged your preconceived notions.
Have you ever had a conversation in which some old movie was mentioned,
something like “The Golden Child” or maybe even something more obscure?
You laughed about it, quoted lines from it, wondered what h... 阅读全帖
